As a recruiter I  view thousands of resumes a week. The most powerful resumes out there have followed these steps to advance their careers. I’m here to spill the tea on how to further your career & the best times to pursue new opportunities, whether it’s within your company or somewhere new.

Navigating your career path can feel like a high-stakes game of chess. Knowing when to make your move for a new job opportunity is crucial for climbing the career ladder. Lets unlock and leverage your secret weapons: timing, strategy, and proactive communication.

Stay Long Enough to Make an Impact

Think of your early career years as an investment. Don’t jump ship too soon! Staying at a company for 3+ years allows for your skills and career to grow. 1You’ll have the time to:

  • Develop Skills and Expertise: Hone your craft and become a true expert in your field! Don’t hold back, adding some shiny new skills to your resume can make a work of a difference when you’re applying and trying to get noticed.
  • Build Up Your Relationships: Create a network of colleagues and mentors who will be there to support you, and motivate you in your Career Journey. These relationships are pure gold when it comes to references and future opportunities.
  • Showcase Your Value: Give it your all! Make sure to demonstrate your value through company projects, personal initiatives, and overall contributions. Let those accomplishments shine bright on your resume!

Sticking around for a few years tells future employers you’re reliable, dedicated, and not afraid to roll up your sleeves. It’s a win-win for your current and future career moves!

Network Within Your Current Company

Internal networking isn’t about schmoozing, awkward small talk or forced connections; it’s about genuinely getting to know the people you work with and letting them get to know you2. Here’s how to master the art:

  1. Build Strong Relationships: Engage with colleagues across different departments, even outside of work projects. Participate in cross-functional projects, as well as company events. Make it your mission to be known across the organization.
  2. Seek Mentorship: Reach out to potential mentors within the company, like your managers & other fellow seniors in the field who can offer guidance and support. They’ve walked the path and are where you want to be, think of them as your career Yoda.
  3. Expand Your Network: Reach out to your personal network, build your LinkedIn Profile and connect with everyone you know! Don’t forget casual chats during lunch or coffee breaks can open doors, these chat could really be with anyone.
  4. Be Genuine: People can tell if you’re being real when approaching them. Truly be interested & involved when getting to know people. We’re all people and these conversations matter and ultimately you’re fostering a deep and valuable relationship!
     




Communicate with Your Managers

Talking about career advancement with your manager doesn’t have to be as nerve-wracking as it seems. Approaching the conversation with a personal & genuine take.

  1. Seek Feedback: Arrange regular one-on-one meetings with your manager to discuss your performance, goals, and career aspirations. Ask for constructive feedback on your current performance and inquire about the skills and achievements needed to reach the next step.
  2. Express Your Ambitions: Clearly communicate your desire for advancement. Let your manager know you’re ready to take on new challenges. Think of it as planting the seeds for your future promotion.

Leverage Internal Human Resources

Human Resources is a valuable asset to every company and they’re there to help you! Human Resources Department isn’t just for handling payroll issues. They can be your allies in climbing the career ladder, so remember to foster these relationships well! Here’s how to get them on your side:

  1. Explore Career Development Programs: Companies will offer training and development programs. These can be key to your career success and are additional opportunities to learn new skills.
  2. Discuss Internal Job Openings: Regularly check the company’s internal job board, personally reach out and discuss potential openings with Human Resources. They know things you don’t. They handle the management of new employees! Why wouldn’t they look internally to scale up careers!
  3. Seek Guidance: Human Resource professionals can offer advice on career paths within the company, it’s their job! Make sure to reach out and develop these relationships with your Human Resources department. 

Why and When to Look Beyond Your Current Company

While internal opportunities are valuable, sometimes the best career move is to look beyond your current company. Here’s why and when to consider making that leap:

  1. Stagnation and Lack of Growth: If you’ve hit a ceiling at your current company with limited opportunities for advancement, it’s time to explore new horizons.
  2. New Challenges and Experiences: Different companies offer unique challenges and experiences that can accelerate your career growth. Exposure to new industries, technologies, or roles will broaden your skill set.
  3. Increased Compensation and Benefits: Often, switching companies can lead to better compensation packages, benefits, and work-life balance.
  4. Cultural Fit: Finding a company whose culture aligns better with your values and work style can lead to greater job satisfaction and productivity.

The Best Times to Make Your Career Move

Timing your job search or advancement efforts effectively can significantly enhance your chances of finding the right opportunity at the right time. 

  1. Performance Review Periods:  Be ready with your achievements. These are prime times to showcase your accomplishments and discuss your future.
  2. End of Fiscal Year: Companies plan for the next year’s budget and workforce needs around this time leading to a surge in new job openings3.  
  3. Late Summer to Late Fall: Companies often finalize their hiring plans for the remainder of the year during this time, resulting in a wave of job openings.
  4. Economic and Industry Trends: Stay informed about economic conditions and industry trends. Growing companies or industries often have more opportunities.

Career advancement requires timing, strategy, and clear communication. Persistence, adaptability, and continuous learning are essential on this journey. Embrace opportunities, seek feedback, and stay proactive in your career path. However, don’t be afraid to look beyond your current company.
