GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

UNIT DESCRIPTION:

 

The Dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CNAS) serves as Director of the UOG Extension Service (Extension) and the agInnovation Research Center (agInnovation). Faculty in Extension and agInnovation are in the Agriculture and Life Sciences (ALS) Division. Within Extension there are currently fifteen (15) tenure track Extension faculty positions; two in Community Development, four in family consumer sciences (two in Nutrition – this position, one in Food Science, one in Family Life), one in 4H youth development, three in Horticulture, one in Plant Pathology, one in Entomology, two in Agriculture Economics, one in Animal Science, as well as four (4) full time non-tenure track faculty (4-H, Horticulture, Ag/Wellness, and Nutrition) and several Extension associates and assistants. The UOG Extension Service enables the multicultural community of Guam to make informed decisions through non-formal education programs based on research and assessed local needs. The agInnovation Research Center, the University’s Agricultural Experiment Station (AES), conducts research based on local and regional needs, often identified by Extension’s community need assessments.

 

CHARACTER OF DUTIES:

 

This is a 12-month non-tenure track Extension appointment faculty position in Nutrition, with a primary role in Extension. This faculty will be under the ALS Division as a member of UOG Extension Service and provide leadership support for Community Nutrition Education Programs, while also working across the various Extension Plan of Work areas.  The successful applicant will be expected to plan, organize, implement and evaluate extension programs and curriculum in nutrition and chronic disease prevention for Guam and the Western Pacific.  Additional extension roles include working with and coordinating extension programs, including the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), Diabetes Prevention: Prevent T2, and the 4H Youth Development Program.  These Extension programs are driven by needs assessments conducted under the 5-year USDA-NIFA Agriculture Research, Extension, and Education Reform Act (AREERA) approved Plan of Work.  He/she shall also teach an undergraduate course in nutrition, mentor undergraduate students, pursue extramural grants, and collaborate in outreach activities. Outputs and evaluation are held to progressively higher expectations by rank (Instructor to Assistant Professor)

 

 

 

This faculty member, like all other full-time faculty members, will be required to submit a Plan of Work during the first two months of the period and an annual report of accomplishments at the end of the period. These are reviewed and approved by the Dean/Director of the College.

 

 

 

The successful candidate is expected to:

 

 

 

Develop science-based extension projects and programs to address the critical needs in nutrition and health; Establish and maintain positive relationships among the various population groups and stakeholders to assess community needs and concerns in nutrition and health; Deliver and/or implement effective community nutrition educational programs, including addressing community needs identified through needs assessment studies  Prepare and implement technical reports (e.g. annual, impact/outcomes) in community nutrition educational issues as determined by the Program’s emerging needs and priorities within Guam and Pacific region Develop and carry out the plans of work approved by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and contribute to federal reports Collaborate with other Extension faculty and staff, local and regional community programs, and local and federal agencies to plan, coordinate, execute, and evaluate programs related to food security, nutrition education, and chronic disease prevention

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Minimum: For the rank of Assistant Professor/Agent III, the following requirements must be met: 1) Ph.D. degree in Nutrition or closely related field with significant coursework in human nutrition from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent; 2) Broad knowledge and training in nutrition, and related wellness fields like: obesity and chronic disease prevention, food technology, health, physical activity promotion, and consumer and family sciences; 3) Demonstrated ability to communicate, interact, and collaborate effectively with students, colleagues and communities, both orally and in writing; 4) Ability and willingness to work with people from a variety of communities and backgrounds; and 5) Must be willing to teach online.

 

 

 

For the rank of Instructor/Agent II, the following requirements must be met: 1) An earned Master's degree in Nutrition or closely related field with significant coursework in human nutrition from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent; 2) Broad knowledge and training in nutrition, and related wellness fields like: obesity and chronic disease prevention, food technology, health, physical activity promotion and consumer and family sciences; 3) Ability and willingness to communicate and work with people from a variety of communities and backgrounds; 4) Must be willing to teach online.

 

 

 

Preferred: 1) Licensure as a U.S. Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN); 2) Background in sports nutrition to help expand our formal 4-H engagement in the High Schools on Guam through partnership with their competitive sports programs. 3) Additional trainer/educator certifications in nutrition, health & wellness, food preparation and safety; 4) Knowledge and understanding of the U.S. Land Grant system and role of Cooperative Extension; 5) Work experience in Cooperative Extension or Outreach education in nutrition and/or obesity prevention with communities, families and children; 7) Knowledge of or experience in working with the Pacific Island populations; and 8) Experience working and teaching in online learning programs.

Police and Court Clearance: Pursuant to Public Law No. 28-24 and Executive Order 2005-34, applicants selected for a position are required to provide original police and court (Superior Court of Guam) clearances of no more than three (3) months old prior to commencement of employment.  Off-island applicants must obtain clearances from their place of residence.  Applicants are responsible for fees associated with obtaining the clearances.
