The Academia and Health Services Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at Texas Southern University offers the postdoctoral fellow in Pharmacy (PharmD) the foundational scientific and career development training necessary for a successful career in academia and health services research. This is a two-year fellowship program. The fellow will receive research training and individualized one-on-one research mentoring, supported by a multidisciplinary team of investigators with expertise in pharmacy, health promotion, community health, and epidemiology. This is a full-time research training experience that includes opportunities to conduct a randomized clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness of community health worker and pharmacist interventions on blood pressure management in adults aged 55 years or older. The ideal candidate for this position will be an individual who has completed·a Doctor of Pharmacy degree with a desire to pursue an academic career and a passion for geriatric care. The objectives of the fellowship are to train the fellow to become an independent investigator pursuing an academic position (e.g., Assistant Professor).
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Postdoctoral Fellow is a specialized healthcare professional trained in clinical practice, health service research, and academia. The Postdoctoral Fellow is a highly collaborative, self-motivated, and creative individual who is adaptable to new processes and has the capacity to function independently. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be highly involved in community-engagement research practices and evidence-based clinical practice.
This is a Grant Funded position.
Research Training and Education (~20%)
- Participate in formalized research training curriculum and seminars.
- Complete the University’s teaching certificate program.
- Complete research tasks assigned by mentors.
- Conduct a literature search and review research topics.
- Participate and present in a multidisciplinary journal club.
- Prepare and present research findings at local and national conferences.
- Prepare and submit manuscripts for publications.
- Prepare applications for the career development award (e.g., NIH K- applications, pilot project grants)
Clinical service (~60%)
- Provide virtual and/or in-person pharmacy medication therapy management (MTM) services on hypertension management in a community setting.
- Practice according to study protocols and evidence-based guidelines.
- Conduct telephone calls to provide education on medication management and lifestyle modifications.
- Follow up and review participants’ blood pressure control and provide appropriate assessment and plan.
- Identify medication-related problems and provide guidance on triage and patient-centered action plan.
- Reports to the Core Director (pharmacy preceptors) daily on activities.
Teaching (~20%)
- Support teaching and learning in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences program through lectures, interactive lessons, and assessments in health-related topics.
- Precept students at the clinical site.

Hiring Range:$50,035.36-$63,795.08
Education:Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or equivalent allied health doctoral degree from an accredited institution
Required Licensing/Certification:Preferred:
- Candidate must obtain a professional license (if applicable) to practice in the State of Texas within 90 days of employment
- Additional training or certification in public health, social determinants of health, or related fields is preferred
Skill in:
- Demonstrated skills in computer software applications (e.g., Microsoft outlook, Teams, office 365).

Working/Environmental Conditions:- Routine office environment, sitting or standing in one location much of the time.
- Willingness to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the program.
- Works closely with direct report to complete assigned tasks and activities in research.
- Some travel locally and to surrounding counties in the greater Houston area is expected ("’ 10%).
