Job Description:

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for an Open-Heart Surgery Training / Fellowship. This fellowship is a two‐year position in Open-heart Surgery during which the fellow will receive advanced and intensive training, primarily in surgical correction of mitral valve disease, with a smaller emphasis on surgical correction of other cardiac conditions using open heart surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass. In conjunction with the fellowship program director, the fellow will have responsibilities of case screening and selection, open heart cardiac surgical techniques, post-operative patient care, and case responsibility including in-hospital management and client communication. Good communication skills and teamwork are essential characteristics of a fellow in addition to strong surgical skills and medical training. Successful open-heart surgery cases are a product of multiservice teamwork and the fellow will be expected to work closely with cardiology, anesthesia, perfusion, and ICU to ensure high quality patient care and programmatic success. Opportunities to participate in both cardiology and surgery rounds, to collaborate and learn from physicians at the medical center (Shands UF), to contribute to advancement of clinical research, and grow the Open-heart Surgery Program at UF are unique aspects of this program that are additive to the opportunity to gain expertise in this highly specialized surgical technique. The successful applicant will be hired into an Adjunct Lecturer position.

Program‐specific Requirements:

‐Time allowance: Up to 3 years can be spent completing the program, but the anticipated completion date is 2 years from start of training

‐ 40 fellowship in training weeks (5 days/week) spent with the program director (Katsuhiro Matsuura)

‐ 4 weeks at human hospital rotating on UF Health Shands Hospital with MDs involved in open-heart (OH) procedures

‐ Publication requirements: A minimum of one retrospective or prospective manuscript or case report submitted to a peer‐reviewed journal.

‐ A semi‐annual written review will be provided by the program director

‐ Must present at least one research or case report at national level meeting (ACVIM Forum or ACVS Summit)

‐ 20 journal club attendance

‐ Maintenance of an OH case log to include no less than 30 OH cases for submission to the program director at the end of the fellowship.

Journal Club: 20 journal club and/or didactic rounds sessions must be attended by the fellow candidate. JC and rounds can be OH surgical, perfusion related, or cardiology related.

Seminars: A minimum of 3 seminars or rounds must be presented by the fellow candidate.

Caseload: A total of 40 weeks per year will be spent on OH Surgery service. An average of 4-5 open heart surgery cases per month are anticipated, with a minimum anticipated annual caseload of 50 cases.

Expected Salary:

$69,000

Required Qualifications:

DVM or equivalent degree.

Preferred:

Preferably, a fellow has completed ACVS or ACVIM residency training, or is board‐certified by the ACVS in small animal surgery or ACVIM in Cardiology.
