The Missouri Attorney General's Office is seeking attorneys with excellent credentials for an Assistant Attorney General position in our Governmental Affairs in the Jefferson City office.

The Governmental Affairs team handles the Office's widest variety of work, allowing attorneys to gain specialized experience and learn new areas of law through both litigation and client advisory services. The section's mission and objectives are:

  • Defending Missouri's Constitution, statutes, and state agencies by representing the State in a wide variety of legal proceedings;
  • Protecting Missouri's public safety, vulnerable populations, and natural resources through initiating enforcement actions against licensed professionals and others that violate their legal obligations; and
  • Promoting local governmental transparency through enforcing Missouri's Sunshine Law and providing public education and training.

Attorneys in the section serve as counsel to the State of Missouri and over 50 state agencies, boards, and commissions. Attorneys practice in state and federal trial and appellate court, and administrative tribunals.

The section's most common legal areas include constitutional law; statutory interpretation; administrative law; professional licensure discipline; environmental and natural resources law; Sunshine Law enforcement and education; election law, campaign finance, and ballot initiatives; government contracts; criminal records expungements; social services and mental health work, including guardianships and abuse and neglect issues; and animal welfare and cruelty issues against inhumane commercial animal breeders. The position may involve intermittent daytime or overnight travel within Missouri.

Preferred experience/skills:

  • Pre-filing investigation, discovery, motion practice, and depositions
  • Familiarity with state court rules and procedures
  • Commitment to public service
  • Excellent legal writing and oral advocacy
