Description

The Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and recreation is currently accepting applications for the part-time position of Assistant Coach for Women’s Tennis.  This position will be for the period of September 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026. The successful candidate will understand the mission of Swarthmore College, the role that intercollegiate athletics plays to support it, and will possess a record of successful leadership, preferably as a head/assistant coach. The Assistant Coach will help coordinate various aspects of the program as determined by the head coach.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Coach is expected to assist in all aspects of the operation of their respective intercollegiate sport program as assigned by the Head Coach, including: teaching and implementing skills and strategy, practice planning and execution, game preparation and execution, scouting, recruiting, student-athlete support issues, and other duties that may be assigned by the head coach.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the organization and operation of respective sport including assuming responsibilities in the absence of the head coach.
  • Assist the head coach in developing and implementing coaching strategies and establishing expectations that facilitate the achievement of the student-athlete learning outcomes in the areas such as: teamwork, time management, problem-solving, conflict resolution, leadership and personal/professional networking.
  • Teaching athletic skills and team concepts as well as implementing skills and strategy in competitive situations.
  • Assist head coach to ensure that all actions of coaches and student-athletes of said team are performed with the appropriate level of instruction and safety precautions; and the that the well-being of everyone is prioritized in all activities.  
  • Provide leadership in establishing, regulating, publicizing and enforcing all team regulations regarding personal conduct.
  • Cooperate with the athletic trainer and other College health personnel in the care and prevention of injury. Coach will also cooperate with the athletic trainer’s office concerning all injuries requiring attention by a physician.
  • Ensure personal conduct and that of the student-athletes is in keeping with the policies of the NCAA.  In addition, such conduct must at all times present an appropriate image to the College, visiting teams and the community.
  • All other duties as assigned and therefore deemed necessary and appropriate by the head coach and/or the Director of Athletics or his/her representative.
Qualifications

Qualified candidates must possess a bachelor's degree, although preference may be given to those who have a master’s degree and coaching experience—preferably with female athletes or student-athletes.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.  Mastery of the skills and strategies associated with the sport.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience working with female athletes or student-athletes.
  • Previous coaching experience and/or education and competitive background indicative of the ability to coach successfully in an NCAA Division III liberal arts college environment.

Working Conditions

  • Work hours that may be diverse and long, including evenings and weekends for instruction, team travel, recruiting and scouting.
  • A high energy level is required as is the ability to deal with the mental and physical stress associated with intense competition. 
  • Duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the head coach and/or the Director of Athletics which may fall outside of the contracted season of competition for program advancement, student-athlete wellness, season preparation or wrap-up and/or other duties as needed.
