Qualifications:
- A master’s or doctorate in computer science or a closely related field with a strong programming background is required. Foreign equivalent degree from a nationally accredited institution accepted. ABD near completion will also be considered (must complete degree by start date). Exceptionally qualified candidates with a master's degree will be considered if they demonstrate substantial teaching effectiveness and/or significant industry experience relevant to the undergraduate curriculum.
- As an educational institution affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Church), BYU–Hawaii prefers to hire qualified members of the Church in good standing, as authorized under 41 C.F.R. § 60-1.5 (a)(6). To be eligible for employment, applicants who are members of the Church must hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend and receive a clearance from the Church’s Ecclesiastical Clearance Office.
Responsibilities:
Teaching requirement is typically 30 semester credit hours per year over three semesters in some (but not all) of the following subject areas/courses:
- Programming and Software Development: introductory programming, object-oriented programming, design patterns, programming languages, and software engineering.
- Mathematical and Theoretical Foundations: discrete mathematics, data structures, algorithms, computational theory, and related areas in algorithmic foundations.
- Systems: computer organization, operating systems, and systems-level courses that develop student understanding of hardware/software interfaces and performance considerations.
- Data and Applications: databases and selected advanced application areas (e.g., web applications, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, or graphics).
Scholarship/research, ongoing professional development, and university service are also required. However, BYU-Hawaii’s primary focus is undergraduate learning and teaching. Benefits:
- Salary range: 110K to 133K, depending on credentials, rank and experience.
- Housing stipend.
- A relocation expense package is provided.
- Annually renewable contract eligible for Continuing Faculty Status (BYU-H equivalent of “tenure-track”).
