Job Description:
  
The Department of English at The University of Florida invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position to teach in the BA track and MFA program in the field of creative writing, fiction specialization, effective August 16, 2026. The normal teaching assignment is two courses per semester.
 
The successful candidate will be expected to 1) maintain an active writing and publication career, 2) teach four courses per academic year at the undergraduate and graduate level, and mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students, 3) contribute service to the Department, the university, and the profession. Department service includes help with MFA program coordination (e.g. events planning, admissions, student mentoring, curriculum oversight) and engagement with Departmental committees and processes.

UF is a major, comprehensive, land-grant, research university. The MFA program within the Department of English is housed in UF's largest college, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. We are one of the country's oldest writing programs, begun in 1949 and with a long list of distinguished writers who have been faculty or students. Gainesville, Florida is a city of approximately 150,000 residents in Alachua County. It sits 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, 67 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, and within a 2-hour drive to the major cities of Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville. Its many nearby parks, springs, and recreational areas offer year-round outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, diving, and nature photography. The search committee will begin reviewing applications on November 1, 2025, and the position will remain open until filled. Applications received after this date may be considered at the discretion of the search committee and/or hiring authority.
Expected Salary:
  
Salary is competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes a full benefits package.

Candidates for this rank shall hold the highest degree appropriate to their field or possess equivalent qualifications based on professional experience. A book or substantial record of literary works is required.
Preferred:
An MFA and/or PhD in Creative Writing is strongly preferred. We encourage applications from candidates who write in genres in addition to literary fiction, such as creative nonfiction, screenplays, YA fiction and/or children's literature, and graphic literature. We are also interested in candidates with service or administrative experience.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
  
For full consideration, applications must include: (1) a letter of application summarizing the applicant's qualifications, interests, and suitability for the position, (2) a complete curriculum vitae, including a list of three references, (3) a statement of teaching goals and practice, and (4) a writing sample of 15-20 pages. After initial review, letters of recommendation will be requested for selected applicants.
 
The final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts to the Department upon hire. A transcript will not be considered "official" if a designation of "Issued to Student" is visible. Degrees earned from an educational institution outside of the United States require evaluation by a professional credentialing service provider approved by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), which can be found at http://www.naces.org/.
