The Department of Humanities at Sul Ross State University International invites applications for a tenure-track, 9-month position as Assistant Professor of History with an emphasis on nineteenth or twentieth century U.S. History and a strong background in Public History to begin in the Fall of 2026. We seek a dynamic and innovative scholar with a strong commitment to teaching, research, and community engagement. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in History with a specific emphasis on Public History, such as “Introduction to Public History,” “Oral History,” “Museum Studies,” “Digital History,” and “Historic Preservation” among others.

  • Doctorate in History is required. ABD applicants will be considered, but appointment will be at the instructor rank and all degree requirements must be completed by February 1, 2027.
  • Two years of teaching experience (graduate student teaching experience accepted) in US History or related history field.
  • In-person teaching and advising in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Any qualifications to be considered in lieu of stated minimums require the prior approval of the Human Resources Director.

Preferred:

  • We welcome applicants with experience in mentoring student leadership and nurturing experiential learning in public history.

Primary Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Teaching starts August 24, 2026.
  • Teaching a 4-4 course load of face to face in Eagle Pass, hybrid, and online undergraduate and occasional graduate courses.
  • Advising students and mentoring history majors’ activities and organizations.
  • Demonstrating progress in research.
  • Participating in curriculum development and assessment.
  • Engaging in service to the department, college, and university.
