Assistant Professor – Science Education at InsideHigherEd

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Houston seeks to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Science Education position to serve our teacher preparation, master’s, and doctoral programs. The Department offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate academic programs in multiple areas of specialization. We welcome candidates whose experience in research, teaching, and service demonstrates our commitment to excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in educational settings.

We are especially interested in candidates who value collaboration and demonstrate the ability to work effectively with colleagues across disciplines. The successful applicant will contribute to a collegial and inclusive academic community by engaging in joint research initiatives, program development, and cross-departmental projects. Candidates whose work fosters partnerships within the College of Education and with broader university, community, and school networks will be viewed with particular interest.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a doctorate focused on science education or a related field. The successful candidate must demonstrate an active record of scholarship and pursuit of external funding commensurate with experience, as well as effective teaching ability and service to the profession. While a breadth of expertise will be considered, particular focus will be placed on applicants whose scholarship (a) informs evidence-based inclusive science education practices; and/or (b) advances science education initiatives across teacher education programs, school, family, and community networks; and (c) connects with other programmatic expertise in the college.

Responsibilities: Primary research responsibilities include maintaining an active research program in science education, seeking and acquiring external funding, publishing scholarly work in high-impact venues, and disseminating work to national and international audiences. Primary teaching responsibilities include expert teaching through face-to-face, online, and/or hybrid delivery of courses in the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. A successful candidate will also participate in course and program development, supervision of graduate student research and teaching assistants, community outreach activities, and service to the Department, College, University, and profession.

Appointment: This is a nine-month appointment. Review of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is Fall 2026. Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and experience and will include benefits.
