About the Department:As part of the Land Grant University, the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University is composed of over 40 faculty that direct a diverse portfolio of programs in teaching, research, and extension. Collectively, these strengths serve our clientele and our science, providing a rich environment for graduate education and training that can be tailored to students’ career interests in basic and translational science or extension. The Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University invites applications for the Charles G. Wright Distinguished Professorship in Urban Entomology. This is a 9-month tenure-track position open to applicants of all ranks with the successful candidate appointed at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.
The incumbent will support the University’s mission, vision, and values through their research (70%), teaching (20%), extension (10%), and service activities.
Research
- Develop an internationally recognized, externally funded research program, to improve the quality of life for humankind through improved management of indoor and peridomestic arthropod pest populations.
- This program is expected to reduce health risks related to structural pests (excluding termites and other wood-destroying organisms) with particular emphasis on housing, hospitals, food service, and food processing.
- Conduct One Health-aligned research on indoor pest management in agricultural settings (e.g., poultry houses, livestock buildings).
- Research that encompasses the missions of Global One Health and the Center for Human Health and the Environment addressing urban pest management issues locally, nationally and in developing countries.
Teaching
- Contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate entomology levels (courses based on expertise and departmental needs), participate in the training of M.S. and Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows, and upon request, provide guest lectures in classes.
- Participation in cross-disciplinary activities to develop innovative cross-disciplinary tools (e.g., biotechnological or engineering) that advance the urban entomology discipline is expected.
Extension
- Extension and outreach through training programs for urban pest management professionals.

- Candidates with research expertise in insect physiology, genetics/genomics, chemical ecology, population biology, integrated pest management, pesticide mode of action and resistance, or arthropod-vectored livestock diseases or other fields that relate or contribute to pest management in the built environment.

- A PhD in entomology or related discipline is required.
- To qualify for the title of Distinguished Professor, the candidate must be an outstanding, current or potential tenured Professor who has achieved recognition well above the criteria for the rank of Professor, be considered one of the best scholars in the discipline and be known and respected nationally and internationally by scholars in his or her field.
- To qualify for the title of Distinguished Scholar, the candidate must be an outstanding current or potential tenured Associate Professor, have achieved recognition well above the criteria for the rank of Associate Professor, be considered one of the top up-and-coming scholars in the discipline, and be known and respected nationally and potentially internationally by scholars in his or her field.
- Excellence in undergraduate or graduate teaching.
- Demonstrable skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relations, and procurement of extramural funding.
- Interests in and engagement with structural pest management stakeholders including industry regulators, policy makers and/or the public.
- Focused research in insect physiology, genetics/genomics, chemical ecology, population biology, integrated pest management, pesticide mode of action and resistance, arthropod-vectored livestock diseases, or other fields that relate to or contribute to pest management in the built environment is desirable.
- Ability to communicate science to all audiences.
- Track record of securing funding required to maintain an internationally recognized program.
- Excellence in undergraduate or graduate teaching.
- Demonstrated professional growth and contributions to the university mission.
- Valid Driver’s License and the abliity to obtain an NC Driver’s License within 60 days of the start date.
