Job Summary: Under general supervision, performs routine phases of construction, test, maintenance, assembly, operation, and data collection functions on assigned experimental and specialized electro-mechanical equipment, machines, and other scientific apparatus. Duties require a general knowledge of practical principles of mechanics, electrical technology, physics or related fields. Follows standard procedures in performing assigned duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists in the development and testing of machinery and equipment with the guidance of engineering and scientific staff.
- Performs standardized or prescribed assignments involving a sequence of related operations, including assembling or constructing simple or standard equipment or parts, and servicing or repairing simple instruments or equipment.
- Sets up and operates standard test equipment, performs routine tasks and records test data.
- Must be able to work from blueprints or sketches.
- Gathers and maintain records of engineering data such as tests, drawings, etc.
- Proactive compliance with NRAO and government safety policies and procedures in own work area is expected.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED.
- One year of related experience.
- NRAO Safety Sensitive - This position is considered safety sensitive and requires successful applicants to pass a pre-employment drug test.
- The ability to read and interpret policies manuals is required. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Must be able to perform simple mathematical calculations. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Must be able to communicate clearly and precisely both verbally and in writing.
- Must be able to operate a personal computer.
Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, required to stand and sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands or arms. Regularly works near moving mechanical parts. Occasionally is required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch. Occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions, and may be exposed to the risk of electrical shock. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Frequently required to read written instructions or drawings, see small, color-coded parts and to talk or hear.
Nature of Work: Work may be performed in a lab, shop or climate-controlled environment; may also work at heights near mechanical and powered equipment.
