Description

This position is responsible for the upkeep, preventive maintenance, and repair of the University’s fleet of vehicles. The role also supports the Maintenance Department by assisting with day-to-day work orders and operational needs.

Examples of Duties

  • Review and analyze work orders, plan tasks, and determine required resources.
  • Collaborate with the Maintenance Supervisor to procure necessary parts and accessories for repairs.
  • Perform routine service and preventive maintenance on University vehicles, including:
  • Lubrication and chassis service
  • Fluid level checks and top-offs
  • Oil and filter changes with oil life monitor reset
  • Filter inspections and replacements
  • Tire rotations, pressure adjustments, and TPMS sensor relearning
  • Diagnose and repair vehicles to factory specifications using appropriate tools (supplied by the technician).
  • Accurately complete work orders, documenting all repairs, parts used, and time required.
  • Communicate progress and schedule tasks with the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Review completed work to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Follow University policies and safety procedures while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Maintain current ASE training and certifications.
  • Assist with snow removal and grounds work as needed.
  • Participate in the department’s on-call rotation.
  • Typical Qualifications

    Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Maine driver’s license required.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a certified automotive technician.
  • Five or more ASE certifications preferred.
  • Refrigerant handling and recovery certification required.
  • State of Maine Motor Vehicle Inspection License required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tools, diagnostic equipment, and repair procedures relevant to automotive service and repair.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical instructions, service manuals, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Strong diagnostic skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve both routine and complex automotive issues.
  • Capacity to apply sound judgment and problem-solving skills in situations where standardized diagnostic methods may not be available.
  • Ability to interpret and follow instructions delivered in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Commitment to high-quality workmanship, safety, and customer service.
  • Required to occasionally sit, crawl, climb into and out of the waste collections truck, operate foot controls on automobiles and equipment, push/pull and lift/carry equipment that weighs up to 75 pounds, and work while on ladders, staging, and lifts.
