POSITION SUMMARY:
The Manager of BI and Data Analytics oversees the BI Portfolio comprising reporting & analytics, data science, data products, and enterprise data management. This position leads team members directly and indirectly, using a federated team model, to turn data into actionable insights and improve company-wide data. The Manager is responsible for the strategic design and enablement of scalable delivered services and self-service analytical tools and templates that enable business and IT functions to access and use data independently. This position leads a blended team of internal/external resources and holds full operational and financial responsibility for the portfolio (budget, strategy, vendors). The Manager will work with stakeholders to define needs and guide the delivery of data solutions, from one-time analyses to production systems, with a core goal of fostering a data-driven, self-sufficient culture.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
20% - Strategic Management
Responsible for managing the BI team to deliver continuous insights and rationale for line-of-business leaders to take action and make decisions. Responsibility to partner with all departments to develop, influence and align the BI portfolio roadmap objectives with company wide strategic goals and align on investment levels.
Define, implement and monitor BI Portfolio and other data metrics and KPIs against objectives.
Develop associated plans and continuous improvement goals - directing team activities to accomplish goals.
Research new technologies and vendors to support the long term vision and growth of Les Schwab.
Think creatively, recognize new business trends, and identify the most valuable opportunities, ideas, and improvements for the organization.
Establish and adhere to standards and processes to guide BI teams and architecture, ensuring adherence to Data Mesh principles and promoting the development and adoption of self-service analytical tools and templates across the enterprise.
Develop a community of practice for data analytics and reporting to empower self-service and to increase the overall knowledge in the enterprise.
Lead, support and educate the enterprise on the use of statistical analysis, BI models, and the appropriate use of data.
35% - Solution Delivery, Maintenance & Support
Responsible for partnering with internal and external stakeholders for activities including system design, analysis and development efforts to modify existing solutions and to implement new custom or commercial off-the-shelf solutions (primarily cloud-based).
Provide functional, technical and operational leadership in primary areas of Business Intelligence including data science, data mining, machine learning, data architecture, data modeling, data warehouse and reporting, emphasizing the delivery of business-validated solutions and upholding Data Mesh principles. Contribute to and influence effort prioritization, team and individual assignments, support activities, etc.
Ensure the stable operation of the BI portfolio's business applications and system integrations including legacy solutions, component platforms and cloud based platforms.
Liaison with assigned business and technology partners to respond to requests for services.
Ensure controls compliance and standards are followed.
25% - Team Management
Lead a team of direct and matrixed employee/contractor resources including data scientists, data analysts, data engineers, BI engineers, report developers, and application specialists.
Create an environment that encourages and enables peak performance from team members by providing leadership, direction, coaching, motivation and guidance.
Build a successful team through the effective selection, hiring and training of new team members.
Provide leadership, direction, coaching, motivation and guidance, goal setting, recognition, and development opportunities, with a focus on fostering best practices for data as a product, the design, development, and effective utilization of self-service analytical tools and templates, and delivering business-validated solutions.
Responsible for formal performance evaluation and career development of direct reports, including corrective action and termination as necessary. This includes working with federated teams and partnering with leaders of embedded resources to measure success and provide the right level of feedback and coaching.
Set operational vision and direction for the team resources in alignment with strategic leadership direction.
Monitor, measure, and report the status of team members' work.
Model the standard of integrity, attitude and service required at Les Schwab.
10% - Vendor Management
Establish and maintain vendor relationships and contracts (MSA's, SOW's, etc.) to support solutions including providers of software, infrastructure, professional services and managed services.
Work with contracted vendors to ensure contractual terms/objectives are met. Experience working with remote (onshore and offshore) teams.
Manage vendor performance to ensure that partners are providing support and solutions in accordance with mutually agreed upon outcomes that are beneficial to Les Schwab's business objectives, and that align with the organization's data strategy and self-service analytics initiatives.
10% - Financial Management
Working with business partners, develop business cases, appropriation requests and annual operating plans and budgets.
Manage to financial plans ensuring adherence to financial objectives.
Manage project/portfolio budgets and scope, and conduct resource planning for risks that are proactively identified.
Review and approve purchase orders and invoices for processing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Educational/Experience Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in mathematics, computer science, statistics, data science or a related field.
Minimum of ten (8) years of relevant experience in a combination of BI development, Analytics, Data Science, Statistical Analysis, and Data Management and (can be concurrent) Minimum of six (6) years of demonstrated leadership.
Required Technical Skills/Knowledge:
Proven track record delivering results in at least three of the following domains with working knowledge in the remaining domains: Data Science, Data Architecture, Data Engineering, Data Mining, ETL, EDA, Machine Learning/AI, Reporting/Dashboards.
Functional and technical experience utilizing Business Intelligence, Master Data Management (customer/product domains) and Customer Information Management (CIM) solutions.
Integration middleware experience interconnecting systems in support of capturing/ingesting data streams and publishing data assets. Experience or familiarity with contemporary integration platforms and techniques common of SaaS platforms.
Familiarity with data science and a demonstrated aptitude for fact-based decision making.
Familiarity with the ITIL framework for guiding application management activities.
Experience with system development methodologies, including Agile and DevOps.
Ability to coordinate systems development activities to establish priorities, resolve technical problems, and maintain proper documentation.
Ability to drive feasibility studies, time and cost estimates, and the development of new or revised applications.
General Knowledge and Abilities:
Experience leading teams comprised of employee direct-reports and external resources including professional services, contingent workers and managed services.
Proven track record of hiring/termination and performance management activities.
Ability to communicate technical and non-technical information clearly and professionally (both verbally and in writing) while ensuring that the quality and content of the message are relevant to the circumstances.
Analytical and decision making skills with proven ability to identify root causes and manage complex tasks.
Ability to organize, manage, prioritize, and budget projects and operations effectively and strategically.
Ability to manage, inspire, and grow employees to ensure successful completion of work tasks and projects to achieve organizational goals and objectives.
Ability to create and promote a culture in which service excellence is expected for all levels of staff.
Ability to establish, maintain, and encourage cooperative working relationships by understanding and relating to other people.
Physical Requirements: Primarily desk position; regularly required to sit, occasionally required to stand and walk. Requires frequent and repetitive use of hands and fingers to operate computer, mouse, keyboard, and office related equipment and the ability to reach with hands and arms. Position requires lifting no more than 10 pounds on a regular basis. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close visual acuity and the ability to adjust focus. Requires the ability to communicate verbally and exchange information over the phone and in person.
Work Environment:Office, non-manual work; the worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. The worker must be available when urgent issues arise that require their coordination or escalation. Urgent-availability needs are rare but the worker is expected to comply when they occur. This may include performing work outside of regular hours and/or supporting teams performing off-hours work by checking in remotely and/or in person as necessary.
