Position Purpose
Under the supervision of the Standardized Patient Educator, the Standardized Patient (SP) simulates/models the role of a patient by portraying scenarios to enhance medical students' clinical skills. Physical examination of SP’s entire body by medical students and physicians is required, with the exception of rectal, pelvic, genital, female breast, and corneal reflex examinations. This role is part-time and scheduled on an as-needed basis.
Helpful Information:
This position’s work hours and frequency is anticipated to be 0-6 hrs/week. We are seeking applicants who are available to work on Mondays from 12:30pm-4:00pm and Wednesdays from 8:30am-12:00pm. SPs are scheduled at least 6 weeks ahead of a scheduled shift and there is an opportunity to fill last-minute open shifts. There may be opportunities to fill shifts on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00am-4:00pm as needed.
Candidates selected to move forward in the interview process must be available to attend a recruitment event on the California University of Science and Medicine campus in Colton, CA, in late November 2025.
Essential Functions
- Simulate a real patient for a patient interview, be a model for physical examination, or both.
- Wear a hospital gown with only undergarments underneath, while on camera and/or observed live through an observation window or video monitor for educational and training purposes. Videos may be used to train other SPs.
- Provide written and oral constructive feedback to medical students.
- Prepare and memorize the script ahead of the learning session.
- Participate in ongoing training sessions to improve portrayal and rating skills.
- Responsible for bringing all case-related materials to training.
- Maintain a clean work area, including but not limited to “turning over” the exam rooms: change pillowcases, clean exam table with a sterile wipe, change table paper, bring in the computer from the hallway and plug it in, and remove all extra paper or other items left in the room.
- Responsible for keeping track of scheduled workdays and hours.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Educational Qualifications
- Advanced proficiency in oral Spanish.
- High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to portray a person other than themselves effectively and consistently in a standardized way.
- Ability to follow rules and procedures.
- Ability to have comfort with own personal health, so that it does not interfere with the patient being portrayed.
- Demonstrate objective interaction with and rating examinees of all backgrounds.
- Excellent reading and writing skills to absorb and use the detailed case training and exam procedural information.
- Excellent recall in order to rate (feedback) the examinees.
- Interpersonal skills when interacting with other employees.
- As a Standardized Patient, the SP cannot display any physical health conditions that may contradict the assigned case.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a Standardized Patient.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Experience in teaching or tutoring.
- Intermediate proficiency in written Spanish.
