Chemistry Tutor (PT)
Location: Utica, NY
Job Type: Part-Time, 10-Month

The Learning Commons is seeking Chemistry Tutor to support student learning and success. The Chemistry Tutorwill assist students across a range of courses, including basic chemistry fornon-science majors and general chemistry for STEM majors. Tutors help studentsstrengthen their understanding of core concepts, build problem-solving skills,and develop effective study strategies.
The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in Chemistry, isenthusiastic about tutoring and learning, and is comfortable working withstudents who have diverse academic backgrounds and levels of preparation.Candidates should also be able to adapt their instructional approach to meetindividual student needs and foster an encouraging, student-centered learningenvironment.
Key responsibilities forthis position include:
- Uses probing questions, active listening, and supportedinquiry to help students develop and strengthen their ideas;
- Engages students in active learning practices;
- Discusses course material to help students gain fluency and confidence incritical thinking;
- Assists students in developing effective study strategies;
- Conducts weekly group study sessions to reinforce course content;
- Provides encouragement to support student retention and completion;
- Maintains accurate records and monitor sign-in stations;
- Refers students to instructors and specialized services such as counseling andadvisement as appropriate;
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of the LearningCommons.
WorkSchedule: Weekdays,between 11:00am - 5:00pm
Hours per week: Up to 20
This is an academic-year position, working during the Fall and Spring semesters.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of an Associate degree in Chemistry or a related field, along with prior tutoring or teaching experience
- Effective communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience tutoring at the community college level
