Job Description
The Chief Education and Research Officer will lead two separate but interdigitated units, while collaborating closely with the ACGME’s Executive Leadership Team, and particularly the Chief Accreditation Officer. As of October 2025, these two units have a total of 32 staff members. In addition, the Chief Education and Research Officer will serve as the executive sponsor of The Journal of Graduate Medical Education (JGME), an academic, peer-reviewed journal with editorial independence but operationalized and published by the ACGME.
The ideal candidate will bring a combination of relevant experience, qualifications, and personal attributes, along with a deep commitment to GME. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to help define the scope and objectives of educational and research activities for the next decade.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborating with the ACGME’s Executive Leadership Team and Board of Directors in developing the ACGME Strategic Plan, particularly with respect to education and research components, and then leading the implementation and reporting on progress of those components Overseeing the development, delivery, and evaluation of the ACGME’s educational activities, including live activities (in-person, hybrid, and virtual), Digital Learning, instructional design, and curriculum development—spanning Learn at ACGME, the ACGME Annual Educational Conference, and varied programming for residents, fellows, chief residents, faculty members, program directors, and designated institutional officials. Ensuring that ongoing activities and new initiatives are associated with specific goals and measurable outcomes and then tracking and reporting key metrics to support continuous quality improvement in education and research Overseeing the conduct of research, including selection of projects, oversight of research and data-sharing agreements, external collaborations, and research compliance (e.g., Institutional Review Board approvals) Selecting, managing, and evaluating the department’s programs and personnel Supporting the growth and implementation of the ACGME’s efforts in competency-based medical education (CBME), including determining the future direction of efforts related to the Milestones and other assessment tools and frameworks
- Working with the Chief Information Officer and the President/CEO to define and develop a data infrastructure to appropriately support the Research Strategic Plan Representing the ACGME in national and international forums Reinforcing existing external partnerships and establishing new ones Participating in outreach efforts to various stakeholder groups to increase awareness and understanding of the ACGME, promoting research and innovation in medical education, while conveying a spirit of organizational service to the GME community and society overall Serving as the executive sponsor of JGME, the academic, peer-reviewed journal published by the ACGME, in terms of budgetary and administrative oversight and business matters; the journal has editorial independence
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Doctoral degree (MD, DO, PhD, EdD) or equivalent An MD or DO with experience as a clinician educator is strongly preferred. Additional training and/or certification(s) in medical education, public health, organizational leadership, or other relevant disciplines is preferred.
A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in medical education, with budgetary responsibility, preferably including GME in an ACGME-accredited Sponsoring Institution Some international medical education-related experience is desirable. Significant medical education research experience, including as a principal investigator Academic promotion to the rank of Associate Professor or Professor is strongly preferred, as is a successful history of garnering competitive research grants.
- Experience in strategic educational planning, instructional design, and program evaluation A track record of innovation in medical education, such as in educational design, assessment, program evaluation, enhancing the learning environment, or other areas Experience with oversight of large educational events and complex, multi-stakeholder projects Involvement in academic journal(s), as a reviewer or, preferably in an editorial role Experience working with or within national medical education-related organizations, as a volunteer, committee member, or employee Prior leadership role(s) in organized medicine/medical education may be an asset.
Deep understanding of and, ideally, experience implementing or overseeing CBME, including with the Milestones and Entrustable Professional Activities Record of establishing trust and credibility with subordinates, peers, superiors, collaborators, and other colleagues

Work Environment
- This is a hybrid position, with significant presence at the ACGME office in Chicago required (estimated at ≥
