About the Department:The College of Design offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate studies in architecture, media arts and technology, design studies, graphic and industrial design, and landscape architecture + environmental planning through several degree programs, including the Ph.D and Doctor of Design. As the college’s doctoral candidates and tenure-track faculty appointments have increased, the research and engagement environment have also grown significantly.
The College of Design seeks an energetic, innovative, and insightful leader to serve as the next Head for the Department of Media Arts, Design + Technology (MADTech). The successful candidate will have a strong background in contemporary design and technology, significant academic and scholarly qualifications, and demonstrated ability to work well with people and build consensus.
MADTech values storytelling, human-centered and community-engaged work, as well as interdisciplinarity and experimental inquiry that promotes cross-disciplinary collaborations across all departments in the College of Design. The Department comprises programs in both Media Arts, Design and Technology (studios) and a program in Design Studies. MADTech is rapidly developing its capacity through visual production, animation, illustration, game design and development, interaction design, data visualization, and virtual production. The Design Studies program within the department is one of the largest majors in the College of Design, offering a combination of studio, research, and history/theory based classes, and preparing students for critical work that spans the physical, social, and cultural realms.

The Department Head for Media Arts, Design and Technology is expected to productively communicate with colleagues to promote a collaborative environment among faculty, students, and staff, while being responsible for, among other things:
- Leading faculty and students in a shared vision; collaborating with other disciplines in the college; serving as the department representative to the College Administrative Council and Department Heads meetings; and as a liaison to facilitate communication between the department, college and university.
 - Serving as the senior faculty advisor to academic unit students, directing them in their studies, and assisting them in forming appropriate committees.
 - Fulfilling a part-time teaching responsibility of approximately six (6) credit hours per year.
 - Overseeing faculty assignments related to departmental courses and service, conducting annual faculty reviews, and providing mentorship for reappointment, promotion, and tenure.
 - Leading academic unit in procedures specific to external reviews.
 - Administering the Bachelor degrees in Design Studies and Media Arts, Design and Technology, and the Master’s degree in Media Arts, Design and Technology.
 - Overseeing the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs’ curricular matters, including course scheduling and long-range planning.
 - Engaging the department in college doctoral programs and university interdisciplinary initiatives.
 - Managing the department’s budget.
 - Advising the Dean regarding faculty appointment matters.
 - Serving as department representative, in collaboration with the Dean, to department-specific alumni and professional groups.
 - Working in collaboration with the Dean to develop department and college-related fundraising goals and ensuring that donor funds are well stewarded in accordance with the Office of Development policies and procedures.
 - Championing a broad range of perspectives to foster a stronger department, and with a commitment for recruiting and retaining many faculty and student voices.
 - Fostering and supporting interdisciplinary research, engagement, teaching, and collaboration within the department, college, and across the university.
 
Other Responsibilities:
The roles of the Academic Unit Head and the Dean are mutually supportive. Each must work to assist the other to achieve the aspirations that are brought into the position. Personal communication between the two individuals is absolutely necessary in order to nurture and sponsor new ideas as well as to secure what is working well within the program. The Dean depends on the Academic Unit Head to act as a senior advisor for College policy while also expecting that the Academic Unit Head will implement policy established by the Dean or the related College Administrative Council.
Minimum Education and Experience:- PhD/Doctoral Degree or terminal design degree (MFA, MAD, MArch, MID, MGD, MLA).
 - Academic administrative leadership experience.
 - Credentials must support appointment at the rank of full professor.
 
- Experience and/or background in visual production, animation, game design and development, and interactive data visualization.
 - A significant research, exhibition and/or publication record.
 - Strong written and verbal communication skills.
 - Professional experience relevant to design fields held in the department.
 - Demonstration of excellence in effective teaching.
 
- Professional licensure, if appropriate.
 - Has received tenure in an accredited related program.
 - Experience working with advisory boards and maintaining strong relationships with alumni and donors.
 - Experience with extramural funding for research and/or funding that supports creative scholarship.
 - Experience with program accreditation.
