Description:

The Department of Accounting and Information Management (AIM) in Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), is accepting applications for a full-time, non-tenure track position in Information Management to begin August 1, 2026. The position will be classified under the Lecturer, Teaching Professor, or Professor of Practice track, with the specific title and rank dependent on qualifications.

Position Details

The AIM Department anticipates hiring a non-tenure-track faculty member to support teaching needs across the Information Systems (IS) curriculum, which includes courses such as Business Process Management, Database Systems, Business Application Development, Systems Analysis and Design, Information Technology Infrastructure, Digital Transformation and Strategy, and AI Literacy and Management.

Applicants should have a strong commitment to teaching and service in an intellectually stimulating environment. The workload description for this position does not include a research requirement. The specific course assignments, as well as the separate determinations of track (Lecturer or Teaching Professor) and rank of all hires, will be based on departmental needs and candidate strengths.

Department Overview

The Department of Accounting and Information Management includes faculty from Accounting and IS and offers courses and programs in both areas. The IS faculty offer a Master of Science (MS) in Business Cybersecurity (MSBC). Additionally, we offer Information Management (IM) collaterals and concentrations for students from a variety of undergraduate business majors to choose, as well as two business core classes required for all business majors. Finally, our IS faculty teach courses to information management specialty track students in the Master of Accountancy program. We are currently in the process of seeking approval for a new undergraduate business major – Information Systems for Business Innovation – to begin in fall of 2027.

Location

The University of Tennessee is located in Knoxville, nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, has a metropolitan statistical area population of approximately 900,000 people. This moderate-sized city has a vibrant nightlife that includes numerous theaters and museums, traditional bluegrass music, world-class restaurants, many cultural festivals, and a downtown Market Square to name a few examples. Surrounded by lakes and the Tennessee River, the Knoxville area boasts wonderful year-round water activities, including boating, fishing, and swimming that make for scenic and breathtaking views of the area.


Qualifications:

Non Tenure Track Title Series and Qualifications:

Consistent with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Faculty Handbook and college/department bylaws, non-tenure-track titles and promotion to higher ranks are determined based on credentials and a documented record of effectiveness in assigned responsibilities (primarily teaching). Standards and procedures related to appointment and promotion standards are additionally governed by department and college bylaws.

Lecturer Series (Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Distinguished Lecturer)

·        Lecturer – Holds (or will hold at the time of appointment) a Master’s degree or higher in IS or a related field and shows promise for excellence in assigned responsibilities.

·        Senior Lecturer – As above, with a demonstrated record of excellence in assigned responsibilities.

·        Distinguished Lecturer – As above, with a sustained, consistent record of excellence in assigned responsibilities.

 

Teaching Professor Series (Assistant, Associate, Teaching Professor)

·        Teaching Assistant Professor –Holds a Ph.D. (or will hold at the time of appointment) in IS or a related field with promise for excellence in teaching and related responsibilities, evidenced by early effectiveness and contributions.

·        Teaching Associate Professor – Terminal degree with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and related responsibilities.

·        Teaching Professor (Full) – Terminal degree with a sustained, consistent record of excellence and evidence of instructional leadership (e.g., curriculum development, mentoring, pedagogical innovation) commensurate with senior rank.

Faculty of Practice Series (Assistant, Associate, Professor of Practice)

·        Assistant Professor of Practice – Possess either a terminal degree in their field of expertise or will have gained equivalent capabilities by virtue of their deep experience and/or licensure/certification. Must bring to HCB unique and rich practical experiences and talents that will benefit students, due to sustained high-level experiences in for profit, not-for-profit, or governmental settings and show promise for excellence in assigned responsibilities. 

·        Assistant Professor of Practice – Possess either a terminal degree in their field of expertise or will have gained equivalent capabilities by virtue of their deep experience and/or licensure/certification. Meet all qualifications of senior lecturers/teaching assistant professors in addition to leveraging professional background, networks, and relationships to enhance students' classroom experience and using professional experience to collaborate with other faculty to enhance the university's teaching mission (i.e., share professional experiences with other instructors to help them become better instructors).

·        Professor of Practice (Full) - Possess either a terminal degree in their field of expertise or will have gained equivalent capabilities by virtue of their deep experience and/or licensure/certification. Meet all of the criteria required of Distinguished Lecturers/Teaching Professors in addition to leveraging professional background, networks, and relationships to enhance students' classroom experience; continuously leveraging professional experience, contacts and networks to enhance student classroom experience and learning outcomes; and continuously utilizing professional experience in collaboration with other faculty to enhance the university's teaching mission.

 

Notes on Evidence and Evaluation:
Appointment rank and later promotion are determined based on evidence of achievement in assigned duties, which may include course evaluations, peer reviews, curricular or program leadership, mentoring, pedagogical innovation, student success contributions, and service aligned with instructional roles. Expectations are calibrated to workload and unit bylaws.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Ph.D. in IS or a related field; a master’s degree with relevant professional and/or teaching experience will also be considered.

· Excellent teaching potential as well as proficiency in teaching IS topics

· A strong commitment to student success.

· Industry experience and/or relevant certifications desirable but not required
