Design and Support Engineer
Precision Custom Components is a manufacturer of custom fabricated pressure vessels, reactors, casks, and heavy walled components requiring highly specialized machining, welding, and/or fabrication.
We are seeking a dynamic and proactive Design and Support Engineer to join our innovative team. This position is concerned with the organization, development, and evaluation of unique designs where no similar design exists. Design and evaluation activities include but are not limited to the following categories: machining fixtures, welding fixtures, assembly fixtures, material handling equipment, safety equipment, inspection equipment/model, testing equipment, shipping equipment/arrangements, general facility equipment, and product drawings. A major emphasis is to ensure that designs are safe, structurally sound, functionally capable, manufacturable, properly evaluated, and documented. Act as a Load Test Examiner and Derivative Classifier. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Duties
- Design of in-house machining fixtures, welding fixtures, testing fixtures, shipping arrangements, material handling equipment, etc. Monitor equipment use and recommend/implement improvements to designs.
- Involved with plant layout, building modification, new building construction, and manufacturing process development activities.
- Perform design calculations, structural and thermal simulations, prepare design reports, and provide technical guidance within the design engineering function.
- Address technical activities associated with adherence to ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section III, Division 1 (Class 1, 2, 3 and MC vessels and supports; Class 2 and 3 storage tanks and Class CS core support structures) and Section VIII, Divisions 1, 2 and 3.
- Assist with the development, justification, and implementation of advanced manufacturing and technology projects.
- Act as a Load Test Examiner whose functions are: Generate piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) for manufacturing procedures along with review and approval of its final version; Train and qualify shop personnel; Equipment maintenance and tracking, ensuring equipment is functional and calibrated for upcoming tests, and acting as technical support during tests.
- Act as a Derivative Classifier who applies classification to new material based on information that’s already classified. In U.S. government and defense settings, previously classified documents could have a classification of confidential or greater. This position would also be responsible for the review and redaction of unclassified, controlled unclassified information (CUI), NOFORN, and unclassified naval nuclear propulsion information (U-NNPI) documents.
- Obtain and/or clarify inputs relating to design and/or project activities.
- Consultation/collaboration with Project Engineering, Quality Methods/Engineering, Weld Engineering, Materials Engineering, Material Handling, Suppliers, and Manufacturing.
- Provide time estimates to complete tasks.
- Generate component and assembly models and drawings using appropriate drafting standards and GD&T.
- Check drawing, model, simulation quality, and/or engineering calculations generated by others.
- Generate/update design guidelines.
- Generate/update model and/or simulation templates for future use.
- Make and/or implement efficiency improvement recommendations to CAD/FEA system settings.
- Responsible for recommending/implementing changes in manufacturing methods and equipment for department and shop efficiency improvements.
- May mentor/train less experienced personnel.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a related engineering curriculum.
Certification: FE/EIT certification required. Must obtain a Professional Engineering (PE) license in Pennsylvania within five (5) years of entering this position.
Experience: Minimum two (2) years as a Design Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Structural Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, Industrial Engineer, or equivalent experience.
Computer Skills: Excellent computer skills required. Must have ability to effectively utilize the Company's design and modeling software which is Siemens NX along with Teamcenter Visualization and Solid Edge 2D Drafting. Must have the ability to effectively utilize the Company’s analysis software which includes Siemens NX Nastran (structural and thermal), PTC MathCAD Prime, and Codeware COMPRESS. Must have a working knowledge of ERP systems and proficiency using Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, OneNote and Outlook.

- Ability to conceive ideas and adopt those concepts into effective design, manufacturing, and engineering concepts/strategies.
- Ability to identify root causes of specific engineering and manufacturing problems and to take corrective actions.
- Working knowledge of design principles, drafting standards, and GD&T.
- Experience in designing and/or working with carbon steel, stainless steel, plastics, and wood.
- Experience with material forms such as bar stock, plate, structural members, weldments, forgings, castings, and lumber.
- Working knowledge with manufacturing practices and their limitations relating to welding, fabrication, mechanical testing, and machine tools such as HBMs, Gantry Mills and VBMs.
- Familiarity with OSHA and transportation requirements.
- Detailed knowledge and experience generating 3D models, assemblies, drawings, and simulations in a modern CAD/CAM/FEA software suite.
- Capable of working cohesively with various other individuals of different disciplines.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others.
- Ability to assist in the development of manufacturing plans.
- Capable of mentoring/training less experienced personnel.
- Strong math skills (algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and fundamentals of calculus).
