We are seeking a collaborative, detail-oriented professional with strong project management skills and a commitment to quality. The Engineer II position provides design and construction project management services across a wide variety of project types, ranging from small to medium-sized renovations and new construction ($5,000 – $5M). This role serves as the university’s primary point of contact, managing 15–20 projects simultaneously in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Projects may include architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life-safety, telecommunications, and security systems across academic, research, residence, dining, athletic, administrative, exterior, transportation, and utility infrastructure.If you are ready to contribute your expertise to support the university’s mission and advance its facilities, we encourage you to apply today.
Key responsibilities and duties included but are not limited to:
- Manage 15–20 projects concurrently, ensuring timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met
- Oversee 3rd-party designers and contractors from scope development through bid, award, construction, and closeout
- Administer submittals, RFIs, change orders, payments, inspections, and move-in activities
- Lead and participate in construction meetings, providing clear communication and updates to stakeholders
- Prepare scopes of work and cost estimates for renovation and new construction projects
- Conduct thorough design reviews to ensure quality and alignment with project objectives
- Ensure compliance with NC building codes, State Construction Office policies, and university guidelines
- Serve as the university’s primary point of contact and customer representative for assigned projects
- Collaborate with Campus Planning, Operations & Maintenance, Business Operations, and Environmental Health & Safety
- Communicate effectively with a varied campus population, fostering collaboration and problem-solving
- Apply working knowledge of building systems, including architectural, mechanical, electrical, life-safety, and other infrastructure systems
- Conduct proactive quality control and problem avoidance to maintain project standards
- Coordinate construction activities to ensure compliance and seamless project execution
- Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in the Engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or and equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions
- Proficient knowledge of standard design and construction practices and have both office and field experience
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to proficiently operate a personal computer and a variety of software for email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases & information collection
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Experience with Microsoft Project and Blue Beam Review is very helpful
- Progressive experience in project management in construction or related field
- Knowledge in the use of organization specific project management programs such as AERES, FM: Interact, AiM and capital improvement
- Knowledge of State and local building codes
- PE License preferred
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
