Job Description
The Department of Ophthalmology at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist/Wake Forest University School of Medicine is recruiting an Academic Faculty Physician to join the Cornea Division. Department Description: The Department of Ophthalmology at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist currently employs 23 faculty in a collaborative and congenial environment. The cornea division includes three full-time clinical cornea faculty and one of the premier corneal fellowships in the country. We have experienced steady growth in clinical and surgical volume that will be accelerated as we move into a new free-standing Eye Institute in 2026. We are a regional leader with established tertiary referrals and a large catchment area that encompasses all of Western North Carolina, as well as Eastern Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina, and West Virginia. Moreover, we are part of the third largest non-profit health system in the country due to our strategic partnership with Atrium Health, now part of Advocate Health. As part of this strategic alignment, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, located in Winston-Salem, NC, serves as the academic core of the entire health system. Our department currently trains four ophthalmology residents per class, as well as three vitreoretinal fellows, one cornea fellow, and one glaucoma fellow. In addition, we plan to add a pediatric ophthalmology fellow in the upcoming year. We have the responsibility of educating Wake Forest University medical students both through the general surgery clerkship and the 4-week elective in ophthalmology. Our faculty have ample opportunity to participate in resident and medical student education, and clinical research and industry-funded clinical trials. Our department also has a strong commitment to service. Members of our faculty, residents, and medical students participate in two international trips to Honduras each year, serve uninsured patients in a local free clinic, and conduct annual vision and eye health screening in the community.
