Frying Pan Farm Park (FPFP) in Herndon, is a park where every day is different. FPFP is a 135-acre park, which includes a 1920s-1950s working farm, equestrian facilities, Visitor Center with museum, rental space, working antique carousel, wagon rides, nature trails, historic buildings, summer camps, and an on-site preschool. The facilities and farm assistant position at Frying Pan Farm Park is responsible for animal care, grounds upkeep, and facility maintenance, ensuring the smooth operation of the park. Working under the farm manager, this role involves performing a variety of tasks ranging from unskilled to skilled labor. This role provides an excellent opportunity to work in a dynamic environment where maintaining park facilities and supporting community events is integral to its mission. The following are key responsibilities:

Animal Care & Crop Management & Maintenance Support:

  • Feed, water, handle, and care for livestock. Assist with breeding and birthing and facility cleaning and repair.
  • Assist with soil preparation, fertilizing, planting, harvesting, and storing crops. Grounds & Facility Maintenance:
  • Perform landscaping duties, including mowing, string trimming, planting, seeding, pruning, and fertilizing.
  • Conduct snow removal, fence repair, carpentry, painting, grading for drainage, tree trimming, and removal of downed trees.
  • Remove litter and debris, and perform custodial work for restrooms, public facilities, office buildings, and stables.

Event & Rental Support:

  • Assist with event preparation and takedown, setup of rentals, and indoor/outdoor ring preparation.
  • Install and maintain equipment for events, such as festivals, equestrian events, and light shows.

Equipment Operation: This position requires experience operating hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment such as tractors, farm implements, water trailer, heavy-duty mowers, drags, chainsaws, weed-trimmers, blowers, edgers, and other landscaping and farm tools.

Leadership & Reporting:

  • Lead daily activities of other staff in the absence of the Farm Manager or Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Maintain logs of work performed, equipment maintenance, and required reporting when the Farm Manager or Maintenance Supervisor is unavailable.

Schedule & Emergency Services: This position requires a flexible schedule to cover day, and evening shifts and weekend as needed. Regular attendance is essential. As Emergency Services personnel, the employee may need to report to work during extreme weather or emergencies, including during unscheduled leave or administrative leave declarations. The position is located at 2709 West OX Road. Herndon VA 20171.

  • Collects and/or disposes of refuse, yard debris, recyclables, and other solid waste materials;
  • Clears sidewalks of ice and snow;
  • Mixes and pours concrete for foundations or other construction repair work;
  • Cleans facilities, to include removing trash and litter;
  • Loads and unloads trucks;
  • Maintains and repairs grounds and turf (i.e., reconditioning, vegetation control, and repairs);
  • Performs various landscaping tasks, to include propagating beds, edging, mulching, and planting;
  • Performs minor building and/or equipment repair and/or maintenance;
  • Operates tractors and mowers, chain saws, or cutoff saws;
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
  • Reports unsafe working conditions;
  • Complies with safety competencies.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of small equipment to include weed eater, push mower, power tamper, chain saw, concrete saw and gas generator;
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use and perform basic scheduled maintenance on various types of hand tools, machinery, etc.;
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices;
  • Ability to perform duties requiring manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude;
  • Ability to operate various types of motor vehicles;
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions;
  • Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, etc.;
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor;
  • Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees and supervisors.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with tractors, riding mowers, small equipment experience with chainsaws, weed-trimmers, edgers, blowers, and walk-behind mowers.
  • Experience with the repair and maintenance of outdoor maintenance equipment, such as mowers, tractors, and landscape equipment.
  • Experience with special events, including festivals, light shows and equestrian events.
  • Farm experience includes animal care and crop land operations.
  • Cleaning and repairs of facilities.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Driver's license (required)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to bend, twist, turn, stand, sit and stoop. Ability to climb on and off equipment. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to operate grounds equipment. Ability to operate motor vehicle and trailer. Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time. Ability to traverse uneven ground. Ability to work in variable weather conditions while performing physical labor. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
