Finishing Manager Job title: Finishing Manager Location: Paris, Tennessee Work Model: On-site Duration: PERM/Direct-hire Industry: Manufacturing Department: Material Handling/Finishing Department Job Description Catapults client, a company in the commercial science lab furniture market located in Tennessee is seeking an experienced Finishing Manager to lead the daily operations of its finishing department. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for ensuring exceptional craftsmanship, safety, and efficiency in the application of stains, sealers, paints, and other specialty finishes on cabinetry and other furniture. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in wood finishing techniques, proven team leadership experience, and a passion for maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and precision in every project. Key Responsibilities Daily Operations & Team Leadership Supervise and coordinate all daily activities within the finishing department, including prep, application, and curing processes. Manage workflows and finishing schedules to meet production deadlines while upholding quality standards. Train, mentor, and evaluate finishing team members on proper techniques, equipment use, and material handling. Assign tasks based on skill level, production needs, and project timelines, ensuring optimal labor utilization. Quality Control & Technical Oversight Conduct in-process and final inspections of finished components to ensure adherence to quality standards and client specifications. Address defects, inconsistencies, or rework needs proactively and coach team members to prevent recurrence. Ensure proper mixing, matching, and application of stains, sealers, paints, lacquers, and specialty coatings on a variety of wood surfaces. Interpret shop drawings, blueprints, and finish schedules to guide correct finishing applications. Coordination & Communication Collaborate with production leaders, and project management, to ensure accurate scheduling and sequencing of finished components. Communicate proactively about changes, delays, or issues that could impact project delivery. Provide input on project-specific finishing techniques, timelines, or materials based on technical expertise. Inventory, Safety & Continuous Improvement Monitor inventory levels of finishing materials, tools, and PPE, and coordinate with procurement to ensure timely restocking. Maintain a clean, organized, and OSHA-compliant finishing area, enforcing proper handling and disposal of flammable or hazardous materials. Implement and lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Ensure all safety procedures and environmental regulations are followed, and conduct regular safety training for the team. Qualifications & Experience Minimum 5 years of experience in wood finishing or millwork production, including 2+ years in a supervisory role. Strong knowledge of finishing materials, equipment, and techniques, including water-based, solvent-based, and specialty coatings. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and finish schedules. Proven ability to lead, train, and motivate finishing teams to consistently deliver high-quality work. Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills. Proficiency in safe and effective use of finishing equipment (e.g., spray booths, HVLP guns, sanding tools, curing systems). Familiarity with OSHA safety standards, hazardous materials handling protocols, and Sara Title V requirements. Strong commitment to workplace safety, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement.
