Job Summary

Manages comprehensive grounds maintenance and horticultural operations across a 210-acre university campus, or areas of the campus assigned.
Includes applying technical expertise to direct all exterior landscape and plant care activities.

Responsibilities

Supervision - 30
- Leads all aspects of personnel management including hiring, training, supervising and motivating grounds maintenance crew; sets and upholds performance standards while ensuring accountability and efficiency in daily operations

Communication - 20
- Demonstrates exceptional interpersonal and communication skills through professional, courteous interactions with various campus stakeholders while effectively leading, coaching, and mentoring team members to foster independent thinking and growth

- Shows strong self-direction and organizational abilities and accountability at all levels in managing grounds operations. Sets clear standards, and delivers concise directives while maintaining transparency, efficiency, and effectiveness across all maintenance activities and personnel management

- Computer knowledge, and expertise enough to learn new computerized systems plus similar technical office knowledge.

Horticultural and Technical Knowledge - 15
- Oversees all equipment, landscape, and horticultural operations including design implementation, turf management, irrigation systems, chemical applications, and tree care
- Maintains detailed documentation of plant materials, chemical usage, and irrigation records

Plan - 15
- Plans, assigns and oversees comprehensive grounds maintenance operations within assigned campus zone, ensuring quality completion of vast tasks including mowing, landscaping, irrigation repair, athletic field preparation, tree work, pesticide application, and operation of specialized equipment/machinery

Maintains Accountability - 15
- Maintains direct accountability for zone aesthetics, safety and project completion while ensuring efficient use of resources, equipment and personnel to meet established maintenance standards

Other - 5
- Other requirements, requests, and assignments

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Associate's degree or vocational or technical school degree in horticulture, turf management or grounds maintenance.

Other Required Qualifications
Valid Driver's License; Commercial State Pesticide License Category 24 - ( already have one) or one must be obtained within 6 months of being hired

Required Experience
- Landscape, grounds maintenance or similar experience of 5 years
- 5 years of related work experience in plants /Horticulture (or) supervising

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Educational Qualifications
BS degree in Horticulture, Turf Management, Grounds Maintenance, Golf Course, Athletic/Sport Fields, or Nursery

Preferred Experience
- 3 years of prior experience in Horticulture, Turf Management, Grounds Maintenance, Golf course, Athletic/Sport fields, or nursery experience

-3 years of Supervisory experience

- Has strength to lift/move required weights
- Coordinates well when using equipment
