Position OverviewThe Human Resources Manager leads all HR operations, manages employee lifecycle, and strategically ensures that the sawmill workforce maintains a high-performing, safety-focused attitude aligned with company values. This role oversees recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, training and development, performance management, compliance, benefits coordination, and Human Resources Systems. The HR Manager serves as a strategic partner to mill leadership while also providing hands-on support to employees at all levels.
Key Responsibilities1. Talent Acquisition, Retention & Workforce Planning- Partner with mill leadership to understand staffing needs and maintain a proactive hiring plan.
- Prioritize candidates who demonstrate a strong safety mindset, situational awareness, and willingness to model safe behaviors as part of daily work expectations.
- Manage full-cycle recruiting for hourly and salaried roles, including sourcing, interviews, selection, and offer process.
- Develop local talent pipelines through school systems, workforce agencies, and community partnerships.
- Coordinate pre-employment screenings, new hire processing, and onboarding orientation.
- Work with a Team of Managers to balance traditional people operations with data-driven insights and technology implementation to identify trends, identify root causes, and make recommendations for continuous improvements in the workforce culture. (ie., Analyze exit survey data and turnover trends to identify root causes and recommend strategies to improve retention and workplace culture)
- Serve as the primary resource for employee questions, workplace concerns, and conflict resolution.
- Support a culture of teamwork, safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Conduct workplace investigations and recommend corrective actions as necessary.
- Coach supervisors on effective leadership, communication, and fair employment practices.
- Coordinate and track required safety, compliance, and skills training.
- Support leadership development and technical skill progression programs.
- Maintain accurate training records within HRIS or Learning Management Systems.
- Guide supervisors through performance evaluations, coaching, and documentation.
- Support corrective action plans and ensure fairness and consistency across the site.
- Assist in succession planning and internal talent growth pathways.
- Maintain HR records and employee files in compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (FMLA, ADA, EEOC, OSHA)
- Communicate directly with Ownership and General Counsel on sensitive employee matters, investigations, and policy interpretation.
- Guide management through disciplinary actions and employee terminations to ensure fairness, documentation accuracy, and legal compliance.
- Support supervisors in enforcing attendance, scheduling, and reliability expectations, ensuring consistency and fairness across all shifts.
- Partner closely with the Safety Manager to reinforce and model a safety-first mindset across all teams and shifts.
- Manage and provide oversight to all office and administrative staff, ensuring effective workflow and support for operations.
- Ensure accurate and timely submission of all employee timecards to the Corporate Payroll Administrator.
- Ensure accurate and timely submission of all documents and reports
- 3+ years of HR leadership experience in manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of employment law and compliance requirements.
- Experience supporting front-line supervisors and hourly employees.
- Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with HRIS/Payroll systems (e.g., ADP Workforce Now).
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
- HR experience in lumber, sawmill, forestry, or heavy industrial environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Administration, or related field OR equivalent HR experience.
- SHRM-CP, PHR, or related professional certification.
