Intellectual Property Associate Attorney (2–5 Years) – Chicago

Direct Counsel is seeking an Intellectual Property Associate to join a nationally recognized law firm’s Chicago office. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a multidisciplinary IP team that handles both prosecution and litigation, with a focus on patents and trademarks across a diverse client base. About the Role

You’ll be part of a collaborative IP group that advises clients at every stage—from filing and prosecution to enforcement and litigation. The firm places a strong emphasis on mentorship and hands-on experience, giving associates the opportunity to:

  • Draft and prosecute patents and manage trademark matters.

  • Support litigation strategy and brief writing.

  • Engage in client-facing responsibilities early in your career.

  • Work closely with senior attorneys on complex, tech-focused matters in an environment that values initiative and long-term growth.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications
  • 2–5 years of experience in IP prosecution and litigation, with a focus on patents and trademarks.

  • Patent drafting experience and strong research and brief writing skills.

  • An undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent technical background).

  • Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills.

  • J.D. from an accredited institution with strong academic performance.

  • Admitted in Illinois and registered as a patent attorney before the USPTO (or actively working toward both).

Compensation & Benefits
  • Base Salary: $230,000 – $280,000 depending on experience.
