Job Description
General Description The Armstrong Institute Center for Health Care Human Factors ( www.hopkinsmedicine.org/armstrong/humanfactors ) in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is recruiting a postdoctoral research fellow with expertise in human factors engineering, cognitive psychology, industrial engineering, systems engineering, public health, health services research, anthropology, sociology or a related field. Experience in health care related work is highly desired. Experience or interest in both qualitative and quantitative analysis methods is also desired. The Center for Health Care Human Factors brings together experts in human factors and organizational psychology with an interdisciplinary group of researchers, practitioners and educators to (re)design health care systems and technologies that work for care providers, in order to create efficient and safe care processes, mitigate risk of patient safety, and improve patient outcomes. The fellow will primarily be working with Dr. Ayse Gurses supporting research projects in a variety of areas such as improving prehospital care delivery, developing EHR based nurse practitioner workload tools, design and implementation of artificial intelligence-based technologies to support frontline care and other and related topics. The fellow will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other interdisciplinary research members of the Armstrong Institute. Responsibilities: Conduct literature review and summarize findings Utilize knowledge of human factors methodologies, quality literature, theories of innovation and operational expertise to help research team develop goals and strategies to achieve those goals. Assist in the preparation of study protocols and materials and other essential study functions (e.g., IRB). Assist in performing qualitative data collection at multiple sites oParticipate in the development of materials for efficient qualitative data collection. oSchedule data collection activities oRecruit study participants; develop recruitment documents (e.g., emails, fliers, etc.,) and facilitate dissemination oConduct in-person observations in a variety of care settings oConduct in-depth interviews and focus groups with study participants (virtual and in-person) with care professionals and clinicians in different healthcare settings oPrepare and administer surveys, etc. Assist in the analysis and management of qualitative data collected from sites oPerform rigorous, computer-assisted qualitative data analysis using software such as NVivo, MAXQDA, Dedoose and other relevant software platforms Author/co-author research manuscripts Identify grant opportunities and assist with grant proposal writing Assist with other relevant work as needed Qualifications Minimum qualifications (mandatory): PhD/MD degree or equivalent Formal training and experience in human factors, cognitive psychology, industrial engineering, systems engineering, public health, health services research, anthropology, sociology or other related discipline required. Willing to conduct in-person data collection in a variety of health care settings. Ability and willingness to travel to participating study sites to gather data in site visits. Must be local to the Baltimore, MD area or willing to relocate. Other requirements (preferred): Demonstrated experience writing peer reviewed publications. Good understanding of both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies Strong interest in conducting field research in health care environments Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a research team Ability to balance and prioritize tasks, and deliver timely outcomes Excellent problem solving, writing and communication skills Willing to learn about human factors engineering and basic principles under the guidance of the study leads Special knowledge, skills, abilities and technical qualifications: Strong interest and/or experience in the design and implementation of artificial intelligence based technologies to support frontline care. Expertise and experience in research processes and methodologies including qualitative and quantitative research methods. Strong interest in conducting field research in health care environments. Experience in reviewing literature using common databases, and use of reference software such as Refworks, Endnote and Zotero. Experience in data collection protocols and IRB protocol preparation. Experience with conducting usability evaluations (formative and summative) Experience in research processes and qualitative methodologies for data collection two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
