Job Description
The Learning Commons Humanities, Languages, and Writing Tutor position offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students’ academic journeys through one-on-one tutoring sessions, leading Learning Commons workshops and activities, and helping connect students to campus resources. As a tutor, you will support active learning by providing one-on-one tutoring in Humanities, Languages, and Writing subjects both in person and online at NW Learning Commons in the Library and at College Centers. You will serve as role models and mentors, fostering a collaborative learning environment that empowers students to succeed, and are expected to model academic success behaviors and help develop resources for student learning.
You also may represent the Learning Commons at campus events, help connect students to other academic resources, and offer valuable feedback to improve services from a student-centered perspective. Additionally, as part of our professional development model in the Learning Commons, all new tutors receive mentorship and, in turn, mentor new tutors and may help support the Learning Commons’ CRLA training program. You may also take part in the Learning Commons embedded tutoring program.
This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about helping others, excited about learning support, and enjoy working in a relaxed, academic environment.
The disciplines/areas that this tutor might serve are Writing, ESOL, U.S. History and Government, French, Spanish, Chinese, American Sign Language, Public Speaking, or other areas within and/or related to Humanities, Languages, and Writing.Job Description
Responsibilities and Duties Include:
Offers one-on-one and small group tutoring in-person and online in subject areas.
Promotes active learning and support-seeking behavior among students.
Maintains a welcoming and inclusive environment for all learners.
Greets students and assists with check-in procedures at the Host Desk.
Helps with wayfinding and answers general questions about tutoring services.
Refers students to appropriate academic resources and support programs.
Participates in classroom visits and embedded coaching when requested by faculty.
Logs tutoring sessions and maintains accurate records via the College’s CRM.
Communicates tutoring floor needs and concerns to supervisors.
Attends orientation and training sessions as scheduled.
Contributes to mini projects such as workshop creation, Canvas redesign, and resource development in subject areas.
Provides feedback to improve Learning Commons services from a student-centered perspective.
Represents the Learning Commons at on-campus events.
Complies with all published College Rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws/regulations governing public employees, including but not limited to those related to document retention and destruction, FERPA, and confidentiality.
Strictly honors the privacy, security, and confidentiality of records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal, and college regulations, policies, and procedures.
Provides service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Reports to: Coordinator, Language Arts Tutoring
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Must have earned an Associate of Arts (A.A.) OR Associate of Science (A.S.) OR Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.), or equivalent certification, and be in good academic and behavioral standing.
Additional Requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted. Must meet at least one (1) of the following criteria:
Have earned a grade of B or higher in the subject being tutored AND/OR documented experience equivalent to a grade of B or higher in the subject/content being tutored and/or
Written approval of a content and/or skilled instructor/faculty OR the endorsement of a tutor trainer AND/OR supervisor
Preferred: Tutoring experience.

Multi-task - Ability to expeditiously organize, coordinate, manage, prioritize, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously to swiftly assess a situation, determine a logical course of action, and apply the appropriate response.
