Job Details:

The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer in Filmmaking to begin Fall 2026. We seek a dynamic educator and practitioner to support our rapidly growing minor in Film & Production Studies––an interdisciplinary program combining hands-on production experience with the study of film history and critical analysis––while also contributing to the Edwards College’s broader media and visual arts community through equipment oversight, collaborative initiatives, and event coordination.

The standard teaching load is five courses per semester, with an expected course release of three courses per year for additional administrative duties (described below). Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in filmmaking and related areas. Courses may include, but are not limited to, FILM 101 Introduction to Film Studies, FILM 102 Introduction to Film Production, FILM 453 Cinematography, COMM 430 Film and Culture: Ethnographic Film, FILM 460/COMM 460 Editing & Post-Production, and special topics such as Directing the Short Film and Documentary Filmmaking. Additional courses will support the department’s presence in the Humanities Core Curriculum.

In addition to teaching, the Lecturer of Filmmaking will: oversee and maintain the Edwards College Video and Photography Equipment Library, ensuring student access to and training in the use of production gear; organize the annual CCU Film Festival, a showcase of student work and community engagement; collaborate with faculty across departments (such as Music, Visual Arts, Theater, and Communication, Media, and Culture) to support interdisciplinary film initiatives and equipment needs; collaborate with community partners such as Visit Myrtle Beach; and mentor students producing short narrative and documentary films as part of the minor’s experiential learning focus.

Required Qualifications are: 1) a terminal degree in filmmaking (or a related field) at time of appointment; 2) demonstrated excellence in teaching; 3) proficiency in digital filmmaking and editing; and 4) understanding of and experience with equipment ranging from cameras (lenses and bodies) to sound/audio and lighting.

Interested candidates should submit the following documents: 1) a letter of application which should address how the candidate’s skills and experience align with the job duties (including teaching), 2) a current curriculum vitae, 3) a statement of teaching philosophy, 4) links to a digital portfolio of filmmaking projects (each project should be clearly labeled with the candidate’s role (e.g., director, cinematographer, editor); and 5) names and contact information for three professional references who can speak to the candidate’s teaching, creative work, and/or collaborative skills. All documents and information should be submitted at: https://jobs.coastal.edu/postings/120328. Candidates who interview must provide official transcripts of graduate work. A review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
