Responsibilities

General Statement of Duties

The Police Lieutenant (Sworn) performs a wide range of law enforcement duties to ensure the safety and security of the University community. The position enforces federal, state, and local laws, as well as University rules and regulations. The Lieutenant supervises subordinate officers through the chain of command, coordinates training programs, and supports strategic initiatives consistent with IACLEA standards. This role requires leadership, judgment, and the ability to respond effectively to emergencies while maintaining professionalism and integrity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership and Supervision
  • Oversees and directs Sergeants and subordinate officers, ensuring adherence to departmental policies, University procedures, and IACLEA standards.
  • Assists the Director in developing and monitoring the departmental budget.
  • Manages personnel matters, including hiring, promotion, discipline, performance evaluations, and grievance resolution.
  • Reviews reports and records submitted by staff for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensures all staff are properly trained, uniformed, and equipped.
  • Coordinates officer training and maintains related documentation.
  • Operations and Incident Response
  • Commands or coordinates law enforcement response during major incidents and emergencies.
  • Responds to and leads operations involving criminal activity, disturbances, or other high-risk situations.
  • Conducts or supervises investigations, including internal investigations and administrative reviews.
  • Responds to medical emergencies, providing first aid and arranging for transport when necessary.
  • Oversees patrol operations to maintain order, safety, and security on campus.
  • Community and Interagency Relations
  • Maintains liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, civic organizations, and community stakeholders.
  • Promotes partnerships that enhance public safety and community policing.
  • Represents the University Police Department at meetings, trainings, and community engagement programs.
  • Administrative and Compliance Duties
  • Ensures departmental compliance with IACLEA standards and other applicable regulations.
  • Prepares reports, logs, and documentation related to incidents, investigations, and operations.
  • Participates in audits, inspections, and safety reviews.
  • Attends hearings and provides testimony in court as required.
  • Additional Functions
  • Provides crowd, traffic, and parking control during campus events.
  • Conducts building security checks and assists with campus access control.
  • Provides security escorts and performs bank deposit transports as assigned.
  • Conducts background investigations.
  • Participates in campus safety education and orientation programs.
  • Qualifications

    • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
    • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including supervisory duties.
    • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
    • North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification required.
    • Current First Aid and CPR certifications required.
    • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
