Key Responsibilities
Biosecurity Leadership
- Design and implement species-specific biosecurity SOPs for swine, poultry, cattle, and small ruminants in collaboration with managers for each animal unit.
- Conduct risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for disease prevention.
- Coordinate review and approval of biosecurity – related animal care/SMPs with Biosecurity Advisory Committee, managers, and clinical veterinarians.
- Monitor compliance of employees and visitors with entry/exit protocols, quarantine procedures, and sanitation standards.
- Conduct regular audits and inspections of facilities, equipment, and personnel practices.
- Maintain detailed records of biosecurity incidents, audits, and corrective actions. Coordinate with veterinarians and external agencies on disease surveillance and diagnostics.
- Lead emergency response planning and outbreak management.
- Serve as primary contact for IACUC recommendations and regulatory inspections with oversight from the Assistant Director.
- Collaborate with Associate Dean for Operations, Chair of Animal Sciences and supervisor Assistant Director to facilitate Biosecurity Advisory Committee (BAC) meetings and promote a culture of accountability.
- Provide ongoing education on emerging disease threats and best practices.
- Develop and maintain contingency plans for disease outbreaks and biosecurity breaches in collaboration with Biosecurity Advisory Committee and staff team.
Swine Production Management & Operational Oversight
- Oversee breeding, farrowing, weaning, nursery, and finishing stages.
- Monitor herd health, feed conversion, weight gain, and productivity.
- Coordinate logistics for marketing and shipment of market-ready hogs.
- Maintain accurate records of breeding, farrowing, mortality, and performance metrics
- Develop and manage work schedules to optimize labor efficiency.
- Supervise and train staff and student employees in animal handling and safety.
- Maintain SOPs and Standard Management Protocols (SMPs) for the swine operation.
- Ensure barns and equipment are clean, functional, and well-maintained.
- Collaborate with staff regarding the maintenance of barns and equipment.
- Manage inventory of feed, supplements, veterinary supplies, and equipment.
- Assist with budgeting and resource allocation.
- Support strategic initiatives to enhance productivity and sustainability.
Education, Research & Innovation
- Promote a culture of biosecurity awareness and accountability.
- Support academic programs through experiential learning and may assist with hands-on instruction.
- Coordinate on-farm research trials and data collection with faculty PIs.
- Contribute to innovation in livestock and biosecurity management practices.
Minimum education required
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in animal sciences, veterinary science, agriculture, microbiology, or related field.
Required Qualifications
- 3 years of experience in biosecurity, animal health, and/or swine production.
- Strong understanding of infectious disease control, livestock management, and regulatory frameworks.
- Proven leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in farm management software, data reporting tools, and Microsoft Office.
- Flexibility to work weekends and holidays as needed.
Desired Qualifications
- 5 years of experience in biosecurity, animal health, and/or swine production.
- Experience in biosecurity and animal health.
- Experience in swine production.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Work in varying environmental conditions (hot, cold, humid).
- Capable of wearing PPE for extended periods and performing physical labor.
Salary Range: $58,700-$77,200. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit’s available budget, and the candidate’s qualifications
