Job Description
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor and the Mental Health Unit Chief, the Mental Health Clinician will provide quality mental health care to incarcerated adult men on Rikers Island. This role requires strict adherence to Department of Correction (DOC) policies and full compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards to ensure a safe, respectful, and abuse-free environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct mental health evaluations, crisis intervention, assessments, and follow-up care
 - Determine and coordinate disposition of patients for appropriate levels of mental health care
 - Collaborate with Reentry Social Workers for discharge planning
 - Complete required documentation and statistical reporting
 - Work closely with the DOC to ensure patient access, proper housing, and treatment disposition
 - Ensure all services comply with PREA regulations and contribute to a safe treatment environment
 - Develop and lead group treatment sessions on mental health observation units and other assigned units
 - Participate in weekly clinical supervision, rounds, case conferences, and treatment planning
 - May conduct psychological testing and supervise social work interns or student volunteers
 - Perform other duties as assigned by Unit Chief, Assistant Unit Chief, and Clinical Supervisor
 
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with behavioral problems, substance use, and severe mental illness in adult populations
 - Experience in inpatient or related clinical settings
 
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field
 
Any of the following valid New York State licenses:
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
 - Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)
 - Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
 - Licensed Psychologist
 - Demonstrated knowledge of and compliance with DOC policies
 - Understanding of and adherence to PREA standards and requirements
