The Department of American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill—a dynamic and growing academic unit—is pleased to announce that we are seeking applications for a faculty position in American Indian and Indigenous studies at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, open area. We seek an outstanding scholar holding a Ph.D. in American Indian and Indigenous Studies, American Studies, or a relevant field. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in research and teaching and will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area(s) of expertise as well as one of the core courses in our undergraduate curriculum, with a teaching load of two courses per semester (2/2). A demonstrated commitment to meaningfully engaging Tribal nations and Native communities through is preferred.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

For more than fifty years UNC’s Department of American Studies has explored US American culture from local, regional, national, and global perspectives. We are committed to interdisciplinary approaches that place American institutions as well as the histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences of American people at the center of academic study. Graduates of our department build careers in public history, arts, museums, and non-profits in addition to law, health, and business. The department serves as the home for the undergraduate and graduate program in American Indian and Indigenous studies and a graduate program in folklore.

Position Summary:

This open-rank faculty position in the Department of American Studies focuses on American Indian and Indigenous Studies. The selected candidate will be appointed at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on qualifications.

This position will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area(s) or expertise as well as one of the core courses in our undergraduate curriculum with a teaching load of two courses per semester (2/2). The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in research and teaching.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Ph.D. in American Indian and Indigenous Studies, American Studies, or related degree.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Demonstrated evidence of research or creative activity that meaningfully engages Tribal nations.
