Pay Rate: $27.31/hr ( $120.00 a day Perdiem for those who qualify)
Position Summary
Hutco, Inc. is seeking experienced Outside Machinists to support shipyard operations at the Newport News Shipbuilding facility. Candidates must have at least 4 years of shipyard or naval experience as a First-Class Machinist. This role demands familiarity with shipboard mechanical systems, the ability to work from technical drawings, and a strong commitment to safety and quality.
Primary Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical repairs, overhauls, and installations on shipboard equipment.
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Work with various systems and equipment including:
- Winches, anchor windlasses, steering gear
- Air compressors, valves, and pumps
- Diesel engines, gas turbines, reduction gears
- Propulsion systems, shafts, propellers, rudders
- Generators, steam turbines, hydraulic systems
- Elevators, doors, weapons systems, deck equipment
- Conduct valve overhauls (steam/WOG), lube oil flushing, hydrostatic testing, and optical alignment.
- Perform shaft alignment and precision fitting using tools such as:
- Micrometers, dial indicators, rulers, and calipers
- Torque wrenches, grinders, boring bars, drill presses, portable mills
- Adhere to all technical, quality, and safety standards per OSHA and shipyard regulations.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: 4+ years as a First-Class Machinist in shipyard or naval settings.
- Technical Proficiency:
- Skilled in precision measuring instruments and alignment tools.
- Familiarity with hull insert installations, fasteners, and shipbuilding nomenclature.
- Must be capable of working from blueprints and performing complex mechanical work.
- Physical Requirements:
- Capable of lifting 50 lbs regularly and working in confined spaces.
- Must be able to climb ladders, work at heights, and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Tolerance for varied temperatures and humidity conditions.

- Reports To: Assigned Shop Foreman or Project Supervisor
- Works With: Planning, QA, Safety, and Production Teams
