Position OverviewKU’s Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support offers a portfolio of collaborative, innovative academic support programs and services to students, faculty, and staff. The Wingspan provides individual and group support through its Peer Academic Coaching program, Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, Learning and Tutoring Services, and Writing Center Services. The Wingspan is a part of the University Academic Support Centers (UASC), a comprehensive student support program consisting of two unique centers designed to strengthen the academic skills and written communication of students at the University of Kansas. UASC supports the University’s commitment to the academic success and holistic development of students. UASC programs encourage student participation both in and out of the classroom, support academic and personal development, and link students to other campus and community resources for academic and personal support and development. University Academic Support Centers is a department within Academic Affairs.
Our Peer Academic Coaches will offer in-person and online academic coaching appointments, facilitate small-group accountability sessions (body doubling) to empower all students at the University of Kansas. Conversations are focused on building better study skills, consistent life habits, and connecting to resources on campus.Job DescriptionPeer Academic Coaches, as representatives of the Peer Academic Coaching Program will meet with students at a minimum of 3-4 times a semester to discuss, develop, and help implement better study skills and life habits. They are student role models who enjoy engaging their peers in the coaching process.

Duties and Responsibilities:

As a Peer Academic Coach, you will: (95%)
  • Conduct in-person and virtual (via Zoom) coaching appointments with students to develop academic beliefs, behaviors, and habits related to studying, managing self and time, reading, and more.
  • Connect and refer students to other campus resources.
  • Attend and participate in regular peer coaching training, team meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Create a safe environment for peer coaching.
  • Facilitate small group accountability sessions (body doubling) to peers requesting this support.
  • Support students in preparing for upcoming exams or projects and building good study skills or techniques.
  • Support with outreach efforts not limited to tabling at events, emailing, making phone calls to students, making flyers, etc. during down times.
  • Based on availability, provided embedded in class support for first year seminar classes and other partners of the peer academic coaching program.
  • Facilitate workshops/presentations on topics such as time management, learning strategies, etc. based on the needs of the program.
Other tasks as assigned. (5%)Required Qualifications
  1. Must be a University of Kansas student enrolled in at least 6 hours.
  2. Must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and be in good academic standing.
  3. Must be an undergraduate student at KU.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Coaching or Mentoring experience as evidenced by application materials.
  2. Exhibit empathy, responsibility, positive attitude, confidence, flexibility, team orientation, strong energy levels, and excellent communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Demonstrate a desire to learn, grow and foster a sense of community among peers as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Be organized and strive to be role models to your peers as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Be a team player with the ability to work individually on projects to group projects in a cordial and respectful way as evidenced by application materials.
Position RequirementsDuring the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).Employment ConditionsPer the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels. However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or non-exempt/hourly).Additional Candidate InstructionsIn addition to the online application, the following documents are required to be considered for this position:
