Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit: The Parr Center for Ethics has proudly served as Carolina’s focal point for inquiry into and discussion of ethical questions since 2004. The mission of the Parr Center is to nourish and foster ethical reflection and moral sensitivity on campus and beyond, guided by the conviction that ethics is everywhere. The Parr Center is committed to integrating abstract work in ethical theory with thoughtful, informed exploration of ethical issues important to the University and the communities it serves. The Parr Center offers rewarding co-curricular programs for Carolina undergraduates; brings numerous renowned speakers to campus; produces and hosts the National High School Ethics Bowl program; and leads numerous ethics outreach activities across North Carolina. The Parr Center is housed physically and administratively within the Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences. Educating for the Virtues of Attention (EVA) is a grant-funded initiative led by the Director and the Associate Director of the Parr Center and the Director of College Thriving. Position Summary: The Parr Center for Ethics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is recruiting for a Postdoctoral Fellow position with the Educating for the Virtues of Attention initiative (EVA). EVA aims to foster attentional literacy across UNC’s campus: the understanding, practice, and valuing of attention as a vital dimension of learning and of human flourishing. The Postdoctoral Fellow will play a central academic and organizational role in advancing the project’s mission to cultivate attentional habits across campus life. The fellow will contribute to the design and delivery of instructor training, faculty development, and campus programming. Key Responsibilities include leading and co-facilitating faculty development sessions, including cross-disciplinary Faculty Communities of Practice on attentional pedagogy; supporting instructor training for first-year UNC courses; collaborating with EVA leadership to develop and assess curricular and co-curricular programming; contributing to research on the cultivation of attentional virtues in higher education; teaching up to one course per semester, as appropriate to the fellow’s expertise and project needs; participating actively in the intellectual community of the Parr Center for Ethics and the Philosophy Department. This is a full-time, 12-month position for two years, contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued funding. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in philosophy or in a closely related discipline relevant to the aims of the Educating for the Virtues of Attention initiative (e.g., education, psychology, cognitive science, or another field bearing on the study and cultivation of attention and intellectual virtue) by the start date of the appointment. Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in philosophy or in a closely related discipline relevant to the aims of the Educating for the Virtues of Attention initiative (e.g., education, psychology, cognitive science, or another field bearing on the study and cultivation of attention and intellectual virtue) by the start date of the appointment. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: Demonstrated research or teaching interest in the philosophy of attention, intellectual virtue, attention, character development, or related areas. Experience with instructor development, pedagogy, or assessment. Evidence of excellence in teaching. Evidence of an ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and to offer philosophical programming that engages a broad audience on or off campus.
