Department Summary

The Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities in the UCLA Department of Asian Languages & Cultures was established in 2014 to realize a sustainable, equitable, globally interconnected future for the Japanese humanities. Its activities include the advancement of scholarship on Japanese literature and the arts; support for literary translation; public programs on performance, film, design, music, art, food, and architecture; and the creation of digital educational content.
Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director and the direct supervision of the Associate Director, the Program Manager has primary responsibility for the strategic development, implementation, and management of outreach, communications and marketing for the Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities in the UCLA Department of Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC). Responsibilities of this position include: manage public events on and off campus in coordination with multiple collaborators and participants; under the direction of the Associate Director, develop, strategize and implement communications and publicity for program activities, including writing and editing copy and creating or coordinating graphic presentations for website, social media, videos/photography, listserves, and other marketing outlets; create and implement marketing strategies for distribution of program items, including catalogs and posters; promote and coordinate academic opportunities for visiting graduate students (VGRs), and small grants programs; coordinate with collaborators in Japan to organize joint international programs and produce bilingual English and Japanese marketing materials; provide support and information to long and short-term visitors regarding travel, housing, and campus resources and policies; and other duties as needed. Hybrid/remote work possible. Occasional in-person evening and weekend hours required.


Salary & Compensation

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications

  • 2-4 Years Administrative Experience. (Preferred) And
  • 2-4 Years Marketing Experience. (Preferred)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills. Ability to interactsensitively and to establish/maintain positive relationships with colleagues,students, community members, workers, and outside organization officials andstaff from diverse social, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds. (Required)
  • Experienced copywriting, copy editing, graphic design, layout, and publishing skills. Ability to create various materials through different mediums for promotion to various audiences. (Required)
  • Ability to take initiative and manage assignments independently, including time management skills and ability to meet deadlines, to maintain high standards in work quality. (Required)
  • Working knowledge and understanding of university-wide policies and online systems, such as Events Online, Marks and Branding, Purchasing and Accounts Payable, BruinBuy Plus, Concur, Transact, IT Services, Transportation. (Preferred)
  • Ability to use PC and Mac, MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Excel, Zoom, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop & Illustrator), Box, Basecamp, web browsers, and the Google Suite. (Required)
  • Ability to use Prismic content management system (CMS) to update website. (Preferred)
  • Experience with and knowledge of social media platforms and social media strategy/marketing/analytics. (Preferred)
  • Ability to adapt to a flexible work schedule, as dictated by operational needs, including staffing off-site events that may take place after normal business hours. (Required)
  • Skill in speaking clearly and distinctly to obtain and covey information to individuals at various organizational levels and from various cultural backgrounds. (Required)
  • Oral and written proficiency in Japanese language. (Preferred)
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a team and individually. (Required)

  • Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. (Required)
