Job Description

Elbow Bread is a 1 year-old retail bakery + cafe from baker Zoë Kanan, opened in collaboration with Court Street Grocers + S&P Lunch. Our shop sits at the elbow-shaped corner of the Lower East Side and Chinatown, where we draw inspiration from the neighborhood’s history and bring a fresh perspective to classic New York baking.

We take a craft baking and flavor forward approach, utilize sourdough and natural leavening techniques, freshly milled and wholegrain flours, and seasonal produce. We’re a small batch bakery that prizes freshness and bakes product throughout the day to stock our storefront. Our offerings range from sourdough loaves and braided challah to inventive takes on laminated pastry, pretzels, knish, babka, cakes, and beyond.

We’re looking for a sandwich maker and counter support person who’s excited to grow with us and contribute to a baker-owned and operated project that aims to fuel our neighborhood and community with good baking, coffee, and hospitality.

Sandwich + Counter Tasks Include:
  • Build and execute sandwiches daily
  • Support bakery counter team with customers as needed
  • Sandwich prep tasks for the week
  • Maintain highest standards of quality and food safety
  • Help ideate recipe ideas and seasonal changes
  • Execute and support production for special events, collaborations, and holidays

  • Maintain organization, cleanliness, and sanitation of the sandwich prep space and equipment

  • Support fellow counter team members to ensure smooth and efficient service each day

  • Station and ingredient inventory maitenence

What We’re Looking For in a Sandwich Maker:
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in similar professional environment

  • Familiarity with culinary arts and cooking

  • Comfortable interfacing with customers
  • Comfortable with using a slicer for breads and meats
  • Comfortable working independently while also being a collaborative teammate

  • Curiosity, passion, and willingness to learn

  • Flexible with scheduling 

  • At least 18 years old and legally authorized to work in the U.S.

  • Able to stand for long periods of time
