The Office of Mayor Jacob Frey is seeking highly-qualified candidates for the position of Press Secretary. This position provides communications, research, policy, and outreach assistance to Mayor Frey.
This position in the Mayor's Office is politically appointed.
The City of Minneapolis does not sponsor applicants for work visas.Job Duties and Responsibilities
Communications
- Effectively manage relationships with members of the press.
- Draft and incorporate relevant feedback for a broad spectrum of external and internal communications on behalf of the Mayor.
- Vet and provide recommendations to senior staff and the Mayor for proactive and reactive media decisions.
- Identify short and near-term opportunities for social media engagement.
- Draft and implement over-arching social media strategy guidelines and planning documents.
- Draft and incorporate relevant feedback for social media posts.
- Work with Enterprise Communications and relevant internal staff to manage the Mayor's web presence.
- Brief staff and stakeholders in preparation for priority events and interviews.
- Provide audio and video technical support at events hosted by the Mayor.
- Provide on-call, emergency material and technical support for the Mayor and various parties in City Hall.
- Appropriately handle confidential information as required and exercise discretion in communicating sensitive information with relevant parties.
Outreach and Research- Assist policy team in reviewing and understanding legislation.
- Organize events and opportunities to connect with constituencies across the city.
- Develop, vet, and pitch proactive external engagement opportunities.
- Work with the Policy and Communication Teams and relevant internal and external stakeholders to execute and/or support events.
- Provide additional research and outreach capacity to the Mayor's Office.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor and/or Master's degree from an accredited college.
- 3-5 years of experience that includes related job duties and responsibilities.
- Attention to detail.
- Reliable and self-motivated.
- Proven organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent time management skills with proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Professional and tactful interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently, handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Knowledge of, and the ability to use, modern office computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, and other software programs; advanced experience with Microsoft Outlook and Office Suite a plus.
- Candidate will be expected to regularly work nights and weekends.
