Board Certification in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine is expected after the end of the third year. The SAIM residency program is highly structured and training is achieved via supervised case responsibility (internal medicine and other specialties), daily case rounds, intern/resident rounds, specialty medicine topic rounds, and the House Officer Seminar Program. The clinical experience in internal medicine is outstanding due to a large and varied caseload and ample support from faculty with varied clinical interests (see below). Residents participate in the clinical education of third and fourth year veterinary students and provide support for interns and the emergency service as needed after hours. A generous amount of time is allotted to independent research activity, and one first author manuscript suitable for publication is required by the end of the residency program. The North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine’s Small Animal Internal Medicine (SAIM) residency program provides advanced clinical training in small animal internal medicine, which meets or exceeds the training requirements outlined by the ACVIM.
