Job Description:

The Sr. Underwriting Specialist -- Large Accounts is a high-impact role focused on managing and underwriting a portfolio of large accounts and is responsible for driving profitability, new business development, and account retention across a focused set of industries.

The Sr Underwriting Specialist -- Large Accounts is responsible for underwriting workers' compensation, commercial automobile and general liability primarily on a loss sensitive basis achieving profitable growth of large accounts. Through technical collaboration and guidance, work within established underwriting authority to solicit, select, reject, and price complex risks. Geographic territory includes the Mid-Atlantic.

Responsibilities:

  • Effectively identify, market and underwrite complex prospective accounts in targeted industries
  • Execute on the selection, analysis and pricing of complex risks and the determination of coverage terms and conditions for new and renewal business in accordance with assigned authority, underwriting leadership collaboration and company underwriting guidelines
  • Exercise sound analytical judgment to make informed and accurate decisions based off loss projection and pricing models
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with local Brokers/Agents and effectively articulate PMA's appetite
  • Participate in the development of agency management strategy and contribute to the development and execution of agency plans
  • Lead a consultative selling approach to generate new business and in coordination with PMA service team members to include accurately assessing the needs of the broker and the client and formulating solutions that effective address those needs
  • Demonstrate high level of planning and organizational skills
  • Collaborate effectively with functional peers in Corporate Distribution, Actuarial, Finance, Claims, Risk Control and Corporate and Regional Underwriting leadership
  • Consult with Risk Control and Claims Representatives to coordinate risk management service to customers
  • Participate in PMA provided customer risk management stewardships and claim reviews
  • Provide feedback to agents, producers, and internal management to focus on business plans and efficiencies
  • Demonstrate commitment to Company's Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, and apply knowledge of compliance policies and procedures, standards and laws applicable to job responsibilities in the performance of work

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required - MBA and/or CPCU, ARM preferred
  • Seven years' experience in Commercial Lines Casualty and Workers Compensation underwriting
  • Strong technical skills in designing loss sensitive products including loss forecasting analytics, structure selection and layer pricing is preferred
  • Knowledge of financial analysis and collateral management is preferred
  • Established relationships with broker/agents in the Mid-Atlantic is preferred
  • Strong negotiation and presentation skills
