Job Description

Position OverviewStudent Teaching Assistants support the students enrolled in general chemistry laboratory courses. These students, often new to college-level chemistry, rely on Lab Teaching Assistants to demonstrate proper lab techniques, promote safe chemical handling, enforce safety protocols, and guide accurate data collection and organization. Lab Assistants are expected to help maintain a safe, efficient, and supportive lab environment while assisting students with course-related procedures and materials.Job Description

40%- Lab & Student Support

  • Oversee student activity during lab sessions, assist with experimental procedures, and provide guidance on data collection and analysis.

25%- Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce safety protocols, monitor lab behavior, respond to incidents, and ensure adherence to university and departmental safety standards.

15%- Grading & Evaluation

  • Review and assess student lab work, provide timely feedback, and track student progress.

10%- Communication & Coordination

  • Maintain professional communication with students, peers, and supervisors; attend required meetings and respond to inquiries.

10%- Preparation & Lab Maintenance

  • Prepare lab materials, ensure equipment is functional and properly stored, and maintain a clean and organized lab space.
Required Qualifications
  1. Must be in good academic standing and making satisfactory progress toward degree completion, as indicated on application materials.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Undergraduate student in Chemistry or a related field who has completed CHEM 130/135 (or equivalent courses), as indicated on application materials.
Position RequirementsDuring the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).Employment Conditions(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.Additional Candidate InstructionsIn addition to the online application, please provide the following.
