Job Description

Position OverviewThe Visitor Experience Student Assistant supports visitor experience strategies that advance university and museum goals, connect visitors with museum resources, deepen relationships with current audiences, and cultivate new audiences. The Visitor Experience Student Assistants also implement protocols to ensure a safe environment and seamless visitor experience, attend staff meetings and trainings, and assist with museum events, programs, and interpretive activities as needed.

PLEASE INQUIRE WITH THE FINANCIAL AID OFFICE BEFORE YOU APPLY TO CONFIRM YOUR ELIGIBILITY.Job Description75% Welcome and orient visitors to the museum and its various resources during public hours; champion a Visitor Experience strategy that prioritizes an inclusive, accessible, open environment to foster learning, discovery, and civic engagement; perform opening and closing procedures for the Visitor Experience Center; participate in visitor studies; maintain the Welcome Desk and associated materials; maintain cleanliness and organization in the lobby, flex space, Little Free Museum, and other public spaces; and work collaboratively with other staff and Visitor Experience volunteers.

20% Program and event-related responsibilities may include contributing to program ideation and development, setting up and striking equipment; greeting/directing attendees; monitoring event activities and visitor needs; tracking attendance and other statistics.

5% Conduct retail financial transactions for on-site sales of Museum Shop merchandise and Museum memberships.Required Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated hospitality and customer service experience as evidenced by application materials.
  2. A passion for the arts, lifelong learning, and interdisciplinary experiences as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Ability to lift 20 lbs.
  4. Available to work:
    1. One or two weekday morning or afternoon shifts
    2. With the possible exception of staff meetings and trainings, all hours are onsite, working with the public at the Spencer Museum of Art.
    3. Available to attend occasional staff meetings and trainings
  5. Awarded and accepted for Federal Work Study for the 2025-2026 Academic year.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Availability Thursday evenings 4–8pm, Saturdays 12–5pm, and/or Sundays 12–5pm.
  2. Must be available to work during summer break and winter break.
  3. Experience planning and producing events (lectures, performances, workshops, film screenings, festivals) as evidenced by application materials.
Position RequirementsDuring the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).Employment Conditions(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.Additional Candidate InstructionsApplications must include a cover letter and resume to be considered.
