Quick Facts
- Massive talent shortage in the U.S. gives cybersecurity professionals strong negotiating power for both salary and remote work opportunities.
- Most companies hire cybersecurity talent nationwide rather than limiting themselves to local markets. This is driven by the talent shortage and the need to secure the most skilled and qualified professionals.
- An AI takeover in cybersecurity is unlikely, as defending against sophisticated attacks requires human judgment, creativity, and a deep understanding of context.
Your Career Journey
A Day in the Life
Your day begins reviewing security alerts and prioritizing incidents by severity. You might investigate a phishing campaign, analyze suspicious network traffic, or patch a newly discovered vulnerability. Mornings often include a SOC team standup to discuss active threats. Afternoons vary—running vulnerability scans, reviewing access logs, or updating firewall rules. When incidents occur, everything stops for triage and containment. You'll document findings in tickets, brief management on risks, and research new attack techniques. Expect on-call rotation for needed after-hours incidents.
