Job Title:SpEd Instructional AssistantSupervisor(s): Principal Assistant Principal and/or TeacherFLSA: Non-ExemptTerms of Employment: 182 daysJob Summary: To assist the teacher in providing developmentally appropriate activities for individual students in accordance with the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).Qualifications:Associates degree or at least two years of study (60 semester hours) at an accredited institution of higher education or by passing theParaPro Assessment(). The minimum passing score on this test is 456. (Para Pro Assessment valid until August 31 2026) *New exam available starting September 1 2025 - Passing the ParaPathways exam.Reading & Writing (5758):minimum passing score - 332Mathematics (5759):minimum passing score - 334Specialized trainingHistory of previous job experience requiredSuch alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptableEssential Duties:Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacherAssists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students their needs interests and abilitiesOperates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes or for individual special needs equipmentHelps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacherDistributes and collects workbooks papers and other materials for instructionGuides independent study enrichment work and remedial work set-up and assigned by the teacherAssists with the supervision of students during emergency drills assemblies play periods and field tripsKeeps bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up to dateAssists with such large group activities as drill work reading aloud and storytellingReads to students listens to students read and participates in other forms of oral communication with studentsChecks and records student attendanceHelps students with a change of clothing self-care and/or personal hygiene when necessaryAssists with lunch snack and clean up routinesCarry and/or help carry students to and from different areas of the school campus (may require lifting)Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual studentServes as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacherMaintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachersParticipates in in-service training programs as assignedUnderstands and actively supports the schools renewal plan through the activities and duties of the assigned positionSupervisor may assign other duties as neededPhysical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
