Psychiatric Medical Director – Adult Behavioral Health

Washington State | Full-Time | Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm | Hybrid

Salary: $283,200 – $346,400 (DOE)

A community-focused healthcare organization is seeking a Psychiatric Medical Director to provide strategic and operational leadership for Adult Mental Health services. This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of behavioral health programs while supporting a diverse patient population of approximately 2,000 primarily Medicaid-insured patients, including refugee and immigrant communities.

The position is structured as a 90% administrative / 10% clinical leadership role, overseeing psychiatric operations, quality initiatives, and provider development while helping lead significant growth initiatives across behavioral health services.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Operations

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for adult psychiatric services.
  • Direct day-to-day psychiatric operations and clinical program oversight.
  • Supervise and support a team of 10 providers including psychiatrists, residents, and nurse practitioners.
  • Conduct provider performance reviews and provide hiring and staffing input.
  • Monitor provider onboarding, caseloads, and capacity management.
  • Lead development of medical policies, clinical protocols, and best practices.
  • Oversee quality assurance initiatives and participate in risk management activities.
  • Facilitate monthly medical staff meetings and collaborate with leadership teams.
  • Attend bi-monthly King County Medical Directors meetings.
  • Serve as a clinical liaison to the in-house pharmacy and primary care clinic.

Clinical Responsibilities (10%)

  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations and medication management.
  • Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary care teams to support integrated care.

Strategic & Program Development

  • Lead the organization’s transition toward Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) designation.
  • Develop and implement a Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program.
  • Support future expansion into Child & Adolescent behavioral health services.
  • Guide the long-term strategy for behavioral health services.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and adherence to psychiatric best practices.

Qualifications

Required

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school
  • Active Washington State medical license
  • DEA license
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience treating acute or chronic mental illness
  • At least 2 years of leadership or management experience in a clinical setting

Preferred

  • Experience in community behavioral health
  • Experience working with immigrant and refugee populations
  • Familiarity with integrated care models

Highly Preferred

  • Strong clinical leadership and administrative skills
  • Knowledge of psychiatric regulatory standards and compliance
  • Experience supervising and mentoring psychiatric staff
  • Experience with EHR systems (EPIC preferred)
  • Commitment to culturally responsive, trauma-informed care
