JOB DESCRIPTION
Clinic Assistant
This position performs human support and clerical work assisting school nurses in ensuring the health of students in schools. Work is performed under regular supervision.
Essential Job Functions:
- Functions under the direct supervision of the registered school nurse.
- Follow the school nurse's instructions regarding procedures and assisting in the daily operation of the clinic.
- Communicates information continually regarding students to the school nurse.
- Maintains and respects all matters concerning students in a highly confidential and private manner.
- Signs students into the clinic, noting the reason.
- Keeps the school nurse informed as to the urgency of student needs.
- Takes students' temperatures and vital signs when indicated.
- Assists with the screening programs.
- Administers care to students as directed; contacts parents as appropriate.
- Locates students as requested by the school nurse.
- Answers clinic phone calls as the clinic assistant and summarizes requests to school nurse.
- Assists with the maintenance of records and reports (e.g. emergency forms and daily or monthly reports).
- Provides minor care and first aid as authorized by the school nurse.
- Assists with medications when trained, observed and directed by the school nurse.
- Helps maintain and support the school clinic in function and appearance.
- Refers any suspected child abuse and neglect cases to the school nurse immediately.
- Assists with medically involved or medically fragile students as directed by the school nurse, and as appropriate to licensure and certification.
- Uses wheelchair to transport injured students to receive treatment.
- Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in a related field.
- Valid CPR and First Aid certification.
- At least one year of experience working in a health care environment.
- LPN, CNA or EMT preferred; license/certification must be current.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Skill in completing data entry and word processing tasks.
- Knowledge of the OSHA Standards regarding potential exposure to disease and blood borne pathogens.
- Ability to communicate with verbal and written language in English.
- Ability to respect and protect the confidentiality of students, staff, and families.
- Ability to physically lift students.
- Ability to work cooperatively with students and staff and accept supervision from the school health advisor.
- Ability to complete training in both cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and a basic first aid program and maintain the necessary certification/training.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
The work environment is primarily inside; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment. This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
