JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Summary
The Laydown Crew Foreman is responsible for supervising and coordinating the daily work of an asphalt laydown crew. This role ensures that hot or warm mix asphalt is received, placed, and compacted in accordance with project specifications, safety standards, and company policies. The Foreman is accountable for accurate daily time and equipment reporting, communication between the field and office, and maintaining crew compliance with operational and safety procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Supervise daily operations of the asphalt laydown crew, including paver operators, roller operators, and general laborers.
Ensure that paving goals, schedules, and production targets are met on a daily and weekly basis.
Monitor crew performance and provide hands-on leadership to maintain a safe work environment, ensure proper material placement, and deliver quality workmanship.
Oversee the receipt of asphalt loads and coordinate their proper application to roadway surfaces within required temperature, depth, and smoothness specifications.
Track and submit daily timekeeping for all crew members and equipment:
Record labor and equipment hours accurately.
Enter time into time tracking software or spreadsheets and submit to the designated field office clerk.
Communicate regularly with the field office, project managers, plant operators, and inspectors to coordinate workflow, material needs, and paperwork requirements.
Relay and enforce company policies, procedures, and safety expectations with crew members.
Maintain clear and organized records related to crew activities, job performance, and project progress.
Ensure pavers, rollers, and related equipment are operated safely, maintained properly, and prepared for daily use.
Coordinate trucking logistics, deliveries, and on-site inspections to support efficient paving operations.
Participate in or lead daily safety meetings and ensure crew compliance with all site safety regulations and reporting requirements.
Assist with hands-on paving work as needed and lead by example in performance and conduct.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; additional vocational or technical training in paving operations preferred.
Minimum of 3-5 years of field experience in asphalt paving or heavy civil construction.
Prior leadership or supervisory experience in a paving crew environment strongly preferred.
In-depth knowledge of asphalt laydown operations, paving equipment, and site safety practices.
Strong communication skills and ability to foster teamwork among diverse crew members.
Ability to accurately track and report time, quantities, and project performance metrics.
Proficiency with or willingness to learn digital time tracking tools and project documentation systems.
Valid driver's license required; CDL or paving equipment certifications may be required depending on assignment.
