Position Overview (Assistant Director of Nursing – ADON)

Luna Rehabilitation & Care Center is seeking an experienced and compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) to serve as our Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON). This leadership role partners closely with the Director of Nursing to oversee daily clinical operations, ensure regulatory compliance, support nursing staff development, and promote exceptional resident-centered care.

The ADON serves as a clinical leader and mentor for the nursing team while maintaining a strong presence throughout the facility. This position is responsible for supporting staffing, coaching and developing nursing personnel, monitoring clinical quality, and ensuring compliance with CMS, New Mexico Department of Health regulations, and facility standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Nursing with the overall management of nursing services and daily clinical operations

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and supervision to licensed nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs)

  • Participate in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and orientation of nursing staff

  • Coordinate staffing schedules to ensure appropriate nursing coverage while managing labor resources effectively

  • Conduct routine nursing rounds to evaluate resident care, clinical practices, and staff performance

  • Coach, mentor, and provide ongoing education to nursing staff while addressing performance concerns and corrective actions as appropriate

  • Complete employee performance evaluations and support professional development initiatives

  • Monitor clinical documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance

  • Assist with infection prevention, Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI), risk management, and resident safety initiatives

  • Support survey readiness activities and assist during state and federal regulatory surveys

  • Collaborate with physicians, therapy, pharmacy, dietary, social services, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure quality resident outcomes

  • Assist with admissions, transfers, discharges, care planning, and clinical assessments as needed

  • Monitor departmental budgets, staffing efficiency, and supply utilization while supporting operational goals

  • Respond to resident, family, and employee concerns professionally and promptly

  • Serve as the Director of Nursing in their absence when assigned

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with a current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing in the State of New Mexico (Required)

  • Current CPR or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

  • Minimum of two (2) years of nursing leadership or supervisory experience in a skilled nursing or long-term care setting preferred

  • Comprehensive knowledge of CMS regulations, New Mexico state regulations, survey processes, infection prevention, QAPI, and clinical documentation standards

  • Strong leadership, coaching, delegation, and employee development skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with residents, families, physicians, and staff

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and critical thinking abilities

  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EMR), Microsoft Office, and healthcare documentation systems
